Living in Canada and having to prove I'm alive every couple of years I sometimes have to call the ministry back yem, located in Newcastle, and its an absolute pleasure to chat in my native tongue, although I've lived here for nearly 50 years I still talk proper. There's one for you Stephen, how Brits move away and still a lot of us maintain our accent.

I adore Stephen Fry... he is one of the kindest souls I have ever seen... well, I have never actually had the privilege of seeing him in person, but what transpires through his books, audiobooks, television, and videos like this gives me that feeling. And I believe dialects and accents made a language richer. The fact that my country of Switzerland has four official languages (three of which we share with our neighbours and many nations across the planet) with thousands of dialects is a good thing in my book.

My dad always said the Geordies were the nicest people in England ( he wasn’t a Geordie)……and he wasn’t far wrong

Being Danish and having lived in Newcastle I ❤❤❤ how Geordie is a mix between English and Danish (Scandinavian).  That was one of the best part of Living there.

Lived in Newcastle upon Tyne for many years. Loved the people and the accent. Truly the best people you could meet.

I lived in Belford, Northumberland in the 90s. My wife was from Newcastle. In Geordiland as I called it, the people were the best I’ve ever encountered.

The thing I love about Newcastle is the accent can change within a small few miles across the city itself. A west end Scotswood Accent is noticeably different to an east end Byker accent and they’re only about 6 miles apart.

My 5year old grandson is in Winchester n speaks like Jeeves n Wooster. He comes to visit us in Newcastle. " Grandpa you make a strange noise ( my accent )" Geordie n proud.

I am fascinated by accents and origins of language. Thank you Stephen for this small slice. Would love more from other districts in the UK.

My wife worked with a guy from Newcastle in the NE and in those days she was an audio typist….at first she said he was so hard to understand but in time it wasn’t really problematic….Another was from 15 miles east of where we lived Atherton and his accent was completely different from someone who lived 15 west of where we were from ….very interesting this……

The Northumberland / Geordie accent is the oldest dialect in England. So, technically we talk the way we were meant to!

Part of the reason Tyneside / south east Northumberland has so many distinct accents is because generations lived and died in the same houses in the same villages working down the same pit, probably married someone from the same village and basically hardly ever travelled around at all - so there are areas less than ten miles apart which still have accents which are distinct and recognisable, although to outsiders just generic 'Geordie'.

I fell in love with my husband due to his accent, his voice, soft Durham. He made me feel like I'd had the warmest hug id ever had, just by talking to me.

I sometimes wonder if my ancesters came from Newcastle.  I absolutely love the Geordie accent!

5:55 My Dad was from Wallsend. I remember going there with him in 1970 to visit my Gran and Uncle. One Saturday we went to the whippet races near his home, and I asked dad what language the old men were speaking; it was broad Geordie and I didn't get a word of it. Fabulous accent –it's champion!!
