I am unable to watch this one. I'm 55, and as a child, we were poor, and moved from apartment to apartment and they were always roach infested. I am still traumatized by that, and have a major fear of roaches. I was VERY fortunate to get out of poverty, and I have a nice home now, and treatment for my ADHD. Not everyone has the resources that have been available to me. I feel for these people even if I can't watch this episode and I hope they are able to get the help they need.
You are so awesome for helping them, and as always, bringing to light the importance of understanding mental illness.

Edit: I also want to come back and say that no one should feel shame for being poor or having mental illness. From reading the comments, this woman is clearly asking for help, and I applaud her for that. I wish her the best. ❤

I was the kid growing up in the house full of roaches. I had a serious ear drum issue and had an ENT pull a whole roach out of my ear. We had other issues that were even worse that I still can’t discuss and I’m 52. I still have nightmares from my childhood. Thank you. 💕

With regards to OCD I have a perfect example of how much of a contradiction it can be. When I was 15 I was the favourite checkout operator of an elderly lady. The older girls has dealt with her for years and didn’t have the patience for her. I used to close my checkout so I could serve her alone with all my attention and I’d get them to open another checkout. She liked her groceries bagged in a certain order and each item bagged together within that order. For example cleaning products in one bag but she would buy multiple solvol soap bars (a heavy duty sandy soap to scrub extreme dirt and grease off your hands) they had to be in their own bags. Each food item in its own bag then all the fridge stuff together etc. She lived alone and was a hoarder she was also extremely wealthy as she had inherited a LOT of money at a young age. She didn’t shower to the point she had one large hair Matt for hair and her skin was brown as though she had a really strong tan. Her hands were immaculate. They were scrubbed so clean she didn’t even have wrinkles they were soft and pink like baby skin. The aged care people would come twice a year and take her to a facility they would cut her hair and wash her and fully empty her house. At her expense of course. This used to cause her so much distress she would immediately start going through rubbish tins in the street to collect her hoard back. I felt so sorry for her she was always lovely to me but she was real mean to most everyone else. No one else was ever kind to her though. They would pull faces because she smelled and not listen to her or make an effort. She became my regular customer for the two years I worked there and would specifically request me. She used to call me ‘that nice young girl’. I wish more people had your compassion ❤

As someone with ADHD who is also a perfectionist, I can easily see how things can spiral out of control. I put off housecleaning until I can do it "right" or "perfectly." I am extremely tidy, but I haven't vacuumed or dusted for months. What I have found is that the less stuff I have, particularly on the floor, the easier it is to keep my apartment clean. I would encourage this woman to move some of the furniture, such as the tall metal shelving unit and the large chair with the ottoman, out of the communal bedroom and into the living room. Then flip the bed so the headboard is against the wall where the entry door is so that she can walk around the bed and have a nightstand or table on both sides. That makes it easier to make the bed and vacuum around it, frees up the window to allow light into the space, and also gives her a place to put things instead of tossing them on the floor. I would also encourage her to begin transitioning her daughter back into her own bedroom. That way they aren't trying to cram two people's clothing into one room, and I can't imagine either of them is getting good sleep. Finally, maybe the church could donate a tall dresser or two for the clothing. The smaller pieces they're using are cluttering the space without providing much useful storage.

Thank you for your time and helping that child sleep in a cleaner house. Growing up, my care taker was an addict that resulted in my living space looking similar. Its comforting knowing that they are people out there who care about the children in these conditions and aren't afraid to involve CPS.

1. Great explanation of the legal/CPS issue. 2. I hope that the mom gets the daughter some therapy to address her issues too, because the child's been taught those unhealthy coping skills too. 3. As a recovering alcoholic,  (24 years as of this past Sep) the 1st step is always the hardest. Knowing and ASKING for help. Holding herself to account and relearning how to stay on top of all her issues will be a major hurdle, but she's got a good foundation with the help you've given her, plus her church group.

Thank you for not belittling people with this problem. My family came through terribly abusive living conditions before we chose to leave. It was so hard. But my children and I built new lives. Four of my kids have serious problems with terribly disorganized and messy homes, even though they are not addicted or destitute. I help when I can. It is difficult and ongoing.

You should make shirts that say, “It Starts With a Sock.”

My first home in the 90s was an estate sale from elderly person. Very clean, empty for months. Built 1930.  Stayed in apartment while working on it. So the home was still most of the day. A very mildly, warm winter brought cluster flies infestation. Big fat flies swarming around, on the windows, insane. After I freaked out and accepted it was not the Omen, or demonic sign LOL the exterminator smoke bombed every floor. The dead flies were up to an inch thick everywhere! Since then, I see a fly in the house I have a quiet meltdown and swat the SoB. I can't fathom roaches, nope.

Your channel has helped me become much more self-aware and to figure out why I am the way I am. You help more than the people whose houses you clean.

I truly value your nuanced description of ADHD. As a person who wasn’t diagnosed until my late 30s, I can look back at my youth and see the patterns. It’s the decision paralysis, the seeing 10,000 steps in every choice. The ADHD combines with the black and white thinking of my OCD and everything is a pushing and pulling mess.

Thank you for your service and protecting the timelines. If it weren’t for you and your band of glam rockers the 80s could have been lost entirely.
