This is called sargam, a part of a raag, here Ustad Nusrat is instructing all the instruments what to play.

They follow what he says, this is all improvised. He is producing music right in the moment. Ustad Nusrat is a genius ❤️❤️

Bro, you gotta learn Urdu to get the divine emotion, essence of subcontinental music. The artistry this language has is purely magical. These subtitles won't give you even 1% of the emotion here.

Love from Bangladesh ❤️

I wished that Eng sub could do justice with lyrics.
But subtitles are not even near to the lyrics.
Still happy that you understand a little bit of the theme of the Qawali. 💖

Absolutely lovely, phenomenal! I was born in the UK and have lived here my whole life, my dad introduced me to Ustadh Nusrats Qawwalis when I was a child. This is one of my favourite performances. I feel like the more you are listening to him the more you are beginning to really feel and embrace this beautiful genre of musical and more so understand what a genius he was. Imagine he was alive now.. the music we would have! You are right, there will never be a legend like him again, in fact his whole group were a huge gift to the world of music.

For anyone who doesn’t understand why they clap in the back - a uniform clap gives the singer and the musicians something to time themselves with.

The claps are a Metronome.
