We kick things off at home base the house, the pool, and the views over the escarpment, lake and ocean.
From there we jump on the quad and get around the property: cheeky cows that open their own gates, the goats that do the mowing for us, the dogs (Boss, Sarg & Schooner), the chooks laying fresh eggs, deer under the trees, water dragons by the dam, and our little off-grid cabin and moto track tucked away in the bush. It’s proper farm life – mud, cow shit, snakes, eagles hunting chickens, bulls, calves and that one cow that’s always spying through the window (Pork Chop 👀).
Then it’s time for some bush to belly. We fire up the charcoal, grab fresh shallots and greens straight from the veggie garden, and make simple old-school sandwiches with charred bullnose peppers (piperki), salami, good bread, olive oil, garlic and salt. Nothing fancy – just proper rustic food cooked over fire, the way I grew up eating it at the table with my family.
To finish, Dad jumps in and shows off his pride and joy: the fertiliser/compost he calls “black gold.” He breaks down how he’s turning cow manure, deer leftovers, wood chips, coffee grounds, kitchen scraps and cardboard into rich organic compost that feeds our veggies. It’s full circle: we hunt the deer, use the guts in the compost, grow the veggies, feed the animals the leftovers, and nothing goes to waste.
