Arachnophobes are so confusing. Let spiders get married

Quick note on the Satisfactory arachnophobia mode: These cat PNGs are the devs cats, which makes it even more endearing

As a non-arachnaphobe, I am genuinely more creeped out by the two shiny floating orb creatures in grounded than the regular spiders

Shadows Over Loathing has an arachnophobia mode that prevents you from encountering any spiders, an arachnophilia mode where you will encounter so many spiders, and an arachnophonia mode that appears if you enable arachnophilia that turns ALL combat sounds into spider noises

My girlfriend is an arachnophobe. I made myself a Minecraft resource pack that removes the legs, the head, and textures the body light blue with dark blue outline, with the word Pók (spider in hungarian) written on its back. Cave spiders are the same but green. Removing the eyes was HARD. I also installed Balabolka and a hungarian voice pack just so that I can record my own goofy voice lines to replace spider sounds. Voice lines include: "pok pok pok" for walking, "ouch" for hurt sound, and "Nyekk!" and "Meghaltam!" ("I have died") for death sounds.

3:16 as someone without arachnophobia, that looks like a tick, which is much yuckier as they are much more dangerous than spiders where I live.

The funny thing is "giant spiders as a standard video game monster" is a direct result of early fantasy video games ripping off Tolkien, who put giant monstrous evil spiders in his novels because he was severely arachnophobic.

For the arachnophobes who are curious about what the "mandibles" on them are actually called, they're chelicerae, and the tiny extra legs by the face are pedipalps. Now you don't need to google!

I remember seeing an Arachniphobia mod for Don’t Starve Together, where the spiders were replaced with a variety of fruits and vegetables. However, they still had their spider legs which were coloured according to the food, and I feel like that made it even worse.

Pretty sure that 'cats appearing out of nowhere' is just how cats operate as a species :D

My absolute favourite patch note:
NoSpiders mod for System Shock 2: "I have now set the spiders to be destroyed as soon as they are created. As a safeguard I've also set them to be invisible, completely silent, slower then your average dead slug, have one (1) hitpoint, have weapons that make no damage AND they are on the Good team so any other AI's around will slay them! That enough for ya?"

For me, it's the legs. I hate spiders, I hate centipedes, and I hate millipedes. 4 legs is fine, 6 is pushing it, anything more triggers it.

Lethal Company put the chelicerae (the fangs/mandibles) so you'd know where the front of the head (the hitbox for you being hit) is, so you wouldn't be at a disadvantage when juking it, the webs can't have much done about them apart like replacing them with silly string, and honestly would be funny if they changed the skittering audio to instead be the developer saying "Spider noises, bunch of spider noises", "BITE!", "Spider saw you, run"

My thing is that any attempt to make spiders "worse" that a lot of fantasy games use, like spikes and chitinous armor, actually makes me less afraid of them. Because my brain no longer reads that as a spider. That's a crab now. What really scares me is when they make really, really accurate spiders. Fast, spindly, bobbing abdomen, crazy eyes, moving feelers and fangs; the more it looks like it's alive, the worse I want to jump out of my skin.

Why is arachnophobia so accepted, but fear of driving a metal box at 100km/h is seen as insane

@EmporerDragon 4 months ago

I can't help but think of the fearlings in Dragon Age Inquisition, which were giant magic spiders that represented people's anxieties and fears. They all have names like Drowning, Blood, Fire, Darkspawn, Loneliness, and so on, but one is named "Ironically, Spiders".

If I remember correctly, Evil West's arachnophobia mode was glitched, which caused even more spiders to appear. I think that would have earned it negative points

@SilverFoxSpirit97 2 months ago

I was about to be like, "It's just an arachnophobia mode, it's not that hard. Surely all of these will score pretty well?" then I saw Jedi Survivor

@rootyful 4 months ago

I think Peak deserves a mention, where you can replace the spiders with tiny little Bing Bongs

I like that coffeestain understands "this isn't a choice or you being a coward, this is literally your brain being wired to see spiders as wrong and disturbing and giving you an adrenaline rush like you are under attack."

Also yeah that "maybe it died maybe it just isn't moving for a second" is killer.
