Is the war with Iran fundamentally a political conflict, or are religious beliefs, biblical prophecy, and end-times expectations influencing how it is understood?

In this wide-ranging conversation, I join Christian scholar Dr. Luis Dizon and host Michael Lofton for an exploration of the religious and theological dimensions of the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.

Drawing upon Islamic and Christian scripture, theology, and history, we examine how religious language is invoked in contemporary political discourse and how the different Abrahamic traditions understand questions of war, morality, prophecy, and the end times.

Our discussion explores the relationship between religion and geopolitics, including Christian Zionism, Islamic perspectives on warfare, Christian just war theory, and the religious significance of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.

We also examine the Islamic and Christian understandings of the Messiah, the return of Jesus عليه السلام, the Dajjal (Antichrist), Gog and Magog, the Mahdi, and the rebuilding of the Third Temple.

Beyond these questions, the conversation addresses the historical relationship between Muslims and Christians, common misconceptions about Islam, the meaning of jihad, and the moral questions surrounding warfare and the protection of civilians.

Throughout the discussion, Dr. Dizon and I engage with one another's respective religious traditions, exploring points of agreement and disagreement while considering how Christians and Muslims can approach difficult contemporary questions through serious theological dialogue.
