The first time most people saw Lindsay Clancy, she was sitting in a Massachusetts courtroom, on trial for murdering all three of her children. The 36-year-old mother was pleading “not guilty due to lack of criminal responsibility,” the Massachusetts-specific version of the insanity defense. Seated next to her was defense lawyer Kevin Reddington, a white-haired man in his 70s who the public would come to call “Big Red.” The other people on her team were nurses, because there was one glaring piece of evidence showing how distraught Lindsay had been the day she strangled her children: she was in a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down after also trying to end her own life by jumping out of her home’s second-story window. Her lawyer argued that Lindsay’s actions were the disastrous and heartbreaking result of postpartum psychosis, over-medication, and a large number of medical professionals who had prioritized ticking boxes on patient forms over stopping and listening to a person’s actual needs. The state’s argument was that Lindsay may have been mentally ill, but she certainly wasn’t psychotic, and they pointed to Lindsay having the forethought to send her husband on errands that would keep him out of the house while she committed the crimes. And as the trial played out in the courtroom and was livestreamed around the world, camps began to form: many saw Lindsay as a monster, others saw her as a fourth victim, and, of course, some suspected a cover-up and started looking at her husband. Because when a senseless tragedy like this happens, our brains tell us that the solution must be equally as massive; someone has to pay. But what do you do when the road to tragedy was paved with the killer’s pleas for help?
