After 48 years of living in my Upper West Side, NYC apartment, I’ve accumulated a lot of stuff—and a lot of memories.

I’ve lived through enormous changes in New York City, including 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, Hurricane Sandy, and the pandemic. Every time, people said New York City was dead and would never recover. And every time, the city came back.

I’ve thought about leaving NYC, too. I considered South Carolina. I considered moving upstate. I even hired an attorney to explore selling the rights to my rent-stabilized apartment. But every time I imagined living somewhere else, something didn’t feel right.

New York City feels like home.

Now I’m going through my 48-year-old life in this apartment, one category at a time, and letting go of what no longer serves me. I’ve tackled my coats, my linen closet, and now—because it’s sweater weather—my sweaters!

This is part of my ongoing journey to declutter my Upper West Side apartment, listen to what my home needs, and figure out what belongs here—and what doesn’t.

Yes, it's a process. Well done minimizing and arranging your sweaters. I'm from So California, migrated to Oregon and then to Hawaii Island in 2001. My husband died 2 years ago .... now what??? I considered moving back to Oregon ... nope, I simply would not fit back into American life and society after 25 years in rural Hawaii. This property is too much for me to continue to care for .... found a little rental house on a family farm close by .... in process .... minimize, sell property .... start a new Life experience .... again .... at 71 .....

Hi Jill , I must say what I have learned a few years ago, in my mid fifties , I now wear my clothes , no more waiting for a special occasion , I get dress a few times a week when I go out , I feel good and I look good , no one has to know I just went to the library or just to visit a friend, or even out to lunch/dinner by myself , lol I love it ! you did what a lot of us can't seem to do , declutter !

Since I have lost 150 pounds I always find myself cold so I'm starting a cardigan collection. My hoodies are too big. That and I want to look like an adult at the age of 65. A somewhat fashionable adult. I bought sun dresses for the summer and I have a denim jacket to wear over them if it's cold. Sunj dresses are like nigh gowns...heaven!!

I’ve heard of Swedish death cleaning. It’s not morbid. It is decluttering so that no one has to do it after you have gone to the great beyond. I am in that process as well. Best wishes.

I am a Californian, born and raised in a big Polish family in San Diego. I left for the big city, San Francisco, in my twenties, then Los Angeles Westside from 30 to 50 . Now I'm in a more rural setting in-between San Diego and Los Angeles. I love everything New York though. I always look for movies set in New York. I don't leave because all of my family is still here in California. Micah and Noah say Hi, Jill! They both take turns sitting on my lap watching for Magpie at the end. Meow!!

I’m glad you’ve decided to stay put in NYC. After 48 years this is your home!! I look forward to seeing your future home improvements. I’ve lived in the same house in Silicon Valley for over 30 years. It was never our “dream house” but it’s comfortable and has a lot of memories. Bonus, our two adult daughters live just 4 miles away, we know our neighbors (and have an annual block party), and the weather is usually kind. And I’ll throw in all the great restaurants, museums and activities a stone’s throw away. So at this point in my life I have no desire to abandon all this for some perceived “greener pasture” (better house, lower taxes, less congestion) in another location. That’s why I stay.

I think at this later stage in life for me, it would be too costly to move. My last move was during Covid ~and I leveled up! Now five years in and have considered other places, but they all have drawbacks. If I want to see other places, I will just travel.

The 100 degree heat in LA has made it super-easy to declutter my sweaters! I'm committed to wearing the ones I kept, which means getting over the mental block about being "dressed up" at home.

I’m long retired have lived in the same townhouse for 32 years (it’s paid for which is a plus). During this time all of my family have moved to North Carolina and they want me to move there too. I consider it on a regular basis but can’t do it, California is my home.

My dogs woke me up at 5:00 a.m. pacific time so I just stayed up and saw your latest video and thought, "Oh goodie! It's Jill!" I received my Laneige last week and it is absolutely wonderful. I'm so glad someone asked about it. I'm enjoying your cecluttering videos. My moving/home story is too long so I'll spare you that.

Beautiful sweaters Jill. The suspenseful music was perfect for the Halloween season but I kept bracing for a possible jump scare at some of the really ominous sounds ha ha. Life sure indeed is a process. This is my last full weekend off of 2026 and I have been resting so well and loving every moment. Off to see friends soon but wanted to catch your video and send my weekly Hello my friend. There is a late late show in Ireland and Rosie was on it recently. It was fabulous. Hey Jill xo. Watching you with all those sweaters made me think....I need to buy some sweaters lol. I need to toss still though. question: The ceder, does it smell badish or does it filter into the sweaters? I know little moths just love to snack on our clothes. I heard of carcole around the house but I think that is just to pulling in house odors. I gotta get on this research lol. Love the folding method, going to try that.
