How do you climb 1,000 places in a cycling race? A look back at La Bizikleta, a 120km sportive with 2,000m of elevation gain in the heart of the Basque Country. 🚴
Starting near the back of the pack out of more than 1,500 riders, I'm facing a significant challenge. Stuck at the very back of the peloton, rather than simply accept this situation, I decided to turn it into a game: how far could I climb? The perfect opportunity to test my form before another qualifying race for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.
The goal isn't simply to achieve a good ranking: I want to know if I'm capable of maintaining the intensity I believe is necessary for qualifying for the Gran Fondo World Championships, without holding back.
In this video, I take you to the heart of the race:
⏱️ 0:00 Starting at the very back of the peloton
🎮 1:00 Let's begin this challenge
⛰️ 2:53 First decisive climb
⚡ 4:48 Gradually moving up through the groups
📊 5:59 A hellish series of steep climbs
🔥 7:50 A steep section at nearly 15% and a fan zone
🏁 10:53 More places to gain until the finish line
I'm a 35-year-old amateur cyclist with a full-time job, and I'm documenting my progress, training, and races here to try and understand how far I can go.
