Many of the comments in this thread are appallingly offensive and obnoxious. These families are letting us into a sacred and vulnerable place. They deserve nothing but empathy and respect. How about just expressing gratitude towards these families who share their stories and struggles with us instead of criticizing and judging situations you cannot possibly understand. Sit back, watch and learn.
I worked with brain injured clients and it really changed my life and the way I view everything. A brain injury can happen SO easily. One of the clients had a tooth infection that traveled to his brain and he is essentially a baby in a grown adult body. Another client had strep throat that traveled to her brain and caused a stroke. And these people have been living like this for 10, 20, 30, even 40 years. They are permanently and severely impaired, forever. I would absolutely rather die than live like that.
Vegetative state or minimal consciousness after a year without real hope of improving - just put me out of my misery. Even with minimal consciousness, it isn't living, it's being kept alive while imprisoned in a barely functioning body with a seriously damaged brain. Why should I want to endure endless suffering?
23 minutes in and im in tears as my young cousin has been in this state for over 15 years he doesn't speak but is alert my aunt gets to take him out to football games and wherever she wants to take him which is amazing x
My husband had a severe heart attack last year; he was in a coma for three weeks. Of course, they checked several times to see if his brain had been damaged, since he had to be resuscitated nine times. Thank God his brain is completely fine, but if it had been any different, I would have let him go, because that’s what he would have expected of me. When a person has no quality of life whatsoever and is just vegetating, that’s not a real life...
