WHAT YOU NEED

Seed beads or small glass beads in green and your flower colours
Thin beading wire, around 0.3mm
Wire cutters and small pliers
A miniature pot, thimble, bottle cap or small planter
Air dry clay, floral foam or glue to set the stems
Green floral tape, optional

WHY THESE BEADED PLANTS TOOK OFF

They never need watering, never drop leaves, and survive being posted in an envelope. They sit on a desk, a windowsill, a shelf or a bedside table and stay exactly as they were the day you finished them. For anyone who has killed every real plant they have owned, that is the appeal.

The technique is French beading, which sounds far more advanced than it is. You thread beads onto wire, form loops, and twist the loops into leaves and petals. There is no pattern to read and no stitch to learn.

VARIATIONS TO TRY

Cactus and succulents, lavender sprigs, cherry blossom branches, sunflowers, tulips, roses, four leaf clovers, money trees, wisteria, monstera leaves, bonsai trees and Christmas trees. Change the bead colour and the same technique makes a completely different plant.

WHAT PEOPLE MAKE THEM FOR

Desk decor and office plants for people with no window, dorm room decor, gifts for plant lovers, birthday presents, Mothers Day gifts, wedding favours, car dashboard decor, dollhouse and miniature scenes, fairy gardens, and cake toppers.

TIPS FOR A FIRST ATTEMPT

Use larger beads than you think you need for the first one, because tiny seed beads test your patience before you know if you enjoy the technique. Keep the wire longer than seems necessary, since trimming is easy and adding is not. Work in good light. Do the leaves first and the flowers second, so the shape of the plant is set before the colour goes in.
