[Synopsis]

On May 17, 1940, Japanese and puppet troops launched a large-scale "mopping-up" operation in the Wujiaqiao area of ​​Jiangdu County. Before the battle, the New Fourth Army's Advance Column had agreed with the Kuomintang's Shandong-Jiangsu-Anhui Border Region Guerrilla Headquarters to jointly resist the enemy, but upon the arrival of the Japanese, the Kuomintang troops withdrew without firing a single shot.

To change the passive situation caused by the Kuomintang diehards' various obstacles and obstructions, and to expand the anti-Japanese front, the New Fourth Army's Northern Jiangsu Command, under the guidance of the CCP Central Committee's strategic policy of "developing northward, fighting eastward, and consolidating southward," adopted a strategy of "uniting with Li, isolating Han, and attacking the enemy," correctly grasping a series of complex relationships between the Party and the people, between enemies and allies, and between military and political matters: the Battle of Guocun marked the prelude to the eastward advance; the first battle at Yingxi, the capture of Jiangyan, and the dramatic events at Qujianglou... However, the Kuomintang diehards viewed the New Fourth Army's repeated concessions to avoid internal strife as a sign of their "cowardice had been broken," and openly declared they would "drive the New Fourth Army to drink water from the Yangtze River," mobilizing a large army to press towards Huangqiao.

Outnumbered and outgunned, they were attacked from both sides. In a perilous situation, Chen Yi and Su Yu devised ingenious strategies and employed unconventional tactics, leading the New Fourth Army in a desperate battle with their backs to the river…
