In 2019, in the American West, a woman's fourth husband was shot, and two months later, her 16-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son disappeared.

The mother told police her son was at a friend's house in Arizona. Six years later, she stood in court without a lawyer and questioned her own witnesses.

This video presents police questioning footage from July 11, 2019, body camera footage of an officer from November 26, and court proceedings in Arizona from 2025, all with Japanese subtitles.

How did the detective question her the morning her husband was shot? Where did the two accounts, heard from separate rooms, diverge? We'll also examine the hidden techniques in her questioning, now that she's the one doing the questioning, using actual footage. We'll explain the investigator's techniques and signs of lying, along with psychological terminology.

The ability to detect lies is a skill you can use for a lifetime.

▼About this video
Laurie Barrow Daybell was convicted in Idaho in May 2023 of conspiracy to murder her two children (Tyree Ryan and JJ Barrow) and Chad Daybell's ex-wife, Tammy, and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. The Idaho Supreme Court is scheduled to hear her appeal against this verdict in November 2026, and as of September 2026, no decision has been reached.
In 2025, she was convicted in Arizona of conspiracy to murder her fourth husband, Charles Barrow, and conspiracy to shoot her niece's ex-husband, Brandon Boudreau, and sentenced to two life sentences (one of which will grant her eligibility for release after 25 years, following her Idaho sentence). An appeal has also been filed regarding this verdict.
Alex Cox, Charles's brother who shot him, claimed self-defense and was not indicted. He died of illness in December 2019.
Chad DeBell was found guilty in Idaho in 2024 and sentenced to death.
Filming was not permitted in the Idaho trial. The verdict and sentencing scenes are from the court's live broadcast.
The body camera footage from November 26th was shown on the courtroom screen during the 2024 trial.
We have not used footage of the body, bloodshed, or descriptions of the body's condition. Analysis is written as "appears to be..." to distinguish it from fact.
Beliefs expressed in court are not treated as teachings of any particular religion.
We offer our condolences to Charles Barrow, Tyree Ryan, JJ Barrow, Tammy DeBell, and their families.
