The history of the Middle East is the story of the most contested ground on Earth. Over the past thousand years, it has been conquered by Seljuk Turks, Crusaders, Mongols, Ottoman sultans and European empires, and almost none of its states held their present borders a century ago.

This Middle East history documentary follows the Seljuks in Baghdad, the Crusades and Saladin, the Mongol destruction of Baghdad in 1258, the rise of the Ottoman Empire and Suleiman the Magnificent, and the Ottoman-Safavid rivalry that shaped the Sunni and Shia map of the region.

It then explains how the modern Middle East was made: the fall of the Ottomans, Sykes-Picot and the borders drawn after World War 1, the discovery of oil, the creation of Israel in 1948, the Iranian Revolution of 1979, the Gulf and Iraq wars, the Arab Spring, ISIS, and the conflicts that have reshaped the region from 2023 to 2026.
