I recently went back to 72 FPS and can tell, you are onto something here.

Trying to wrap my brain around the idea you run your races on the SE when you have a 5090 and a full Air!

This video came out at like the exact right time i started getting things for my headset to make it work to play lmu and ive already played vr for around 1k hours so i dont think the thing about the finding out where to focus but thanks

I think people heavily underestimate what their eyes can adapt to over time. I come from fighting games where reaction times and recognizing animations are the most critical skills to have and they're mostly locked to 60fps.

I have a Crystal Light, and I run it at 72 FPS. Before this, I owned an Oculus Rift S, a Quest 2, and an HP Reverb G2. I had particular trouble with the G2 because it was locked at 90 Hz; back then, I was playing F1 23, and keeping a steady 90 FPS was brutally hard. The optimization was terrible, so every single frame drop felt massive—at times, it felt like it was chugging at 15 FPS (and I was on an RTX 3080). Maybe that experience built up my tolerance, who knows, but honestly, I can't tell the difference between 72 Hz and 90 Hz in VR. And I say this as someone with a 240 Hz OLED monitor, where for flat screen games I target at least 90 FPS if I can, and I definitely notice the difference between 60 and 90 there! Maybe my brain is broken, or maybe it's just really adaptable, I don't know. But I always thought I'd keep the Crystal for ages because "I'm not even maxing it out yet, down the line I can run 120 Hz." Now I'm thinking that in the future, I'll probably just crank up the graphics settings instead. Right now on LMU, I stick to 72 Hz with mostly low settings and the headset resolution set to 80%, using a 5070 Ti. The bottleneck on my rig is the CPU—I'm still on a Ryzen 5000 series with DDR4 RAM. But with current prices being what they are, I'm staying put right where I am, at 72 FPS!

I have a feeling there’s a little reference here to my comment under the previous video, where I said this would be a deal breaker for me. 😊

Personally, I can actually see the screen flicker at 72 Hz on my Crystal Light, and I find it a bit uncomfortable. I can also clearly notice that the image feels less smooth compared to 90 or 120 Hz.

When I want to play AC Evo, I have to use 72 Hz, and it’s perfectly manageable from time to time. But I personally wouldn’t want to spend €1,200 on a headset knowing that I’d be permanently limited to 72 Hz.

And thanks for all your VR videos! They’re always very informative and really help promote this amazing technology.

72Hz doesn't work for me, yeah, I understand 72Hz, and I understand salesmen too.

I run a 5080, and have a Dream Air, at 90hz my system is maxed out at very low graphics, so the stream seems unsmooth, while if I run at 72hz I can run higher systems and it is super smooth.  Image looks the same

I understand VR settings and I understand what I see and experience in the headset. Was running the Quest3 at the default 72hz for the first year then finally started playing with different refresh rates. 90hz is the sweet spot and I won't be going back.

One thing about the overhead needed, I rolled back my nvidia drivers to version 581.80 (November 2025), and the frametimes are much more stable, with less frame drops. Now I don’t need as much headroom to have a rock solid fps

I'm used to playing games where I frequently bounce between 30 and 90 fps. I'm completely desensitized to framerate in VR. I turned my Crystal Light up to 120hz one time just to see, thought it was neat, turned it back to 90hz and haven't gone back.

On mid range VR headset like quest 3 120fps reduces a lot shimmering and aliasing  effect compared to 90fps

100 % agree with you bro. I have 600+ hours in VR. 72 is absolutely enough. I do use Pimax super OLED with 1.1 sampling and aggressive crop for top and bottom. Rtx 5090.

I have been using the elhydro mod (cropping FOV) to get the feeling of wearing a helmet. And it gains loads of fps too. A real driver wears a helmet, and thus does not see the whole environment. The view is restricted

I’ve dropped from 90 to 72 on the dream air .l can’t tell the difference other than it looks incredible in the headset , turning supersamplingb up to 1.25 with a 5080 . Best move l made for iracing .

I really did give 72 a good try but after 15mins or so, every single time I get that sicky feeling in the pit of my stomach. 90 is the absolute bare minimum for me. I must just be very susceptible to it. Great video as always mate!

I predominantly use VR for drifting and rally so with the extra head movement required over circuit racing, 72hz is not an option. 80hz with my HP reverb G2 is the bare minimum with optimised frame times so I'll wait a bit longer to upgrade.

Me maxing out my settings, usually playing at 20-30 fps >.>

5800x3d with 3080ti and an odyssey+: I run a highly modified Assetto Corsa at 60fps and it is smooth enough for me with no screen door effect

i fly condor 3 soaring sim with my quest 3 at 120hz and if your looking out at the horizon while in a thermal you can really see the difference between 72 and 120. i recently started playing with the new 144hz update for virtual desktop and its amazing for elite dangerous with all the stars as reference points its just so much smoother while flying around.
