The black lion on a yellow background, the coat of arms of the Counts of Flanders, is today inextricably linked to the Flemish Region, the Flemish movement, and the Dutch language. Due to Belgium's recent history, it is also sometimes associated with a form of resistance, even defiance, towards the French-speaking world. And the memory of certain battles fought by the Counts of Flanders, such as the famous "Battle of the Golden Spurs" (whose date of July 11th will be used for the Flemish Community Day), contributes to this perception. Yet, the true history of the Counts of Flanders not only has nothing to do with recent linguistic disputes, but it is also, and above all, a very… French story!
