Nice. Very nice. When I was a kid in the 80's, a guy that lived near my local train station used to have a fleet of these freaking things (the 6 cylinder versions) and his daily, a V8 version. It used to sound cool, but I remember older guys talking about how it was a pos. Looks pretty good to me though. I wonder if the guy is still kicking, and his huge back yard is still full of rusting P76's....Anyway, now you can look for another hidden gem; The AMC Rambler Javelin V8 coupe. I know they were assembled here, but not sure whether everything was made in America and was shipped out, or if any of the parts were completely manufactured here. An old guy that used to be a cleaner in my primary school had one (yeah, the 80's were a great time for auto enthusiasts. School cleaners could just roll around in V8 coupes...).
My grandfather bought a p76 new in 1974, daily drive for many years and after he retired it went around Australia twice towing a vicount caravan. Also many family holidays in the Leyland. Finaly got traded for a VL Commodore. Ex NSW police commy was no match for the P76. Fucking best car for the day...... The Leyland v8 was apparently the choice engine for swapping into a valiant in the 1980's
in the eighties I had a mate who had his 4.4 bored and sleeved out to 5L, from memory I think he used Holden 186 pistons, it was a great donk, lots of torque. I knew another P76 owner who fitted a complete 3.5 Group A EFI system to his 4.4. It took a lot of fiddling but he eventually got it running. as for the boot, the same mate who had the 5L helped me when I blew the diff in my XD, I knew where there was a wrecked XB on my parents property and we cut the diff out of that and put it in his P76's boot!
