My mother was a British “war bride”, and why father was an American GI.  I so regret not asking her more questions about the war. I do remember one story.  My mother was a teacher, and on some weekends she escorted children from big cities to little towns where they were considered to be safer.  Anyway, this story was such a good example of my mother’s quick thinking and action.  She said she had a small child next to her on the train.  For some reason, I think the child was about 3.  Anyway, he removed a shoe, and threw it out the window.  My mother immediately went into action mode, pulled the other shoe off and threw that one out, also.  She said that one shoe was not going to do the child any good, and if some one found the one shoe that the child threw out, it wouldn’t do them any good either.  But if they were found in the same vicinity, someone might find the pair, and be able to pass them on to someone that could use them. My mother always emphasized the rationing, and how everything was precious during war time.  This was soo like her!

My grandmother was evacuated to her grandmother who lived in the country.

This makes you wonder how many children faced abuse, or even just had a really horrible time with their host families. I’ve never really considered that part of it until hearing your mother’s story.

I can’t believe your uncle made it all the way home on his own, during a war. They were made of tougher stuff back then.

Imagine children being evacuated at an extremely young age (1, 2, 3, 4) and being returned back to your parents - you wouldn't want to go back because you had known your host family for longer than your real family.

thank you for this.  how interesting and how devastatingly disruptive to families.  i wonder if any of us coming after this lovely woman’s generation would be able to handle such a time.

Lovely to hear your memories. My mum was evacuated to wales. Her youngest sister came back and could only speak welsh. My mum then joined the land army and was in it till it disbanded. Your generation is truly inspiring x

My great grandfather was 9 months old when wwii started idk how he got evacuated

My dad and one of his sisters were evacuated to Shropshire from Liverpool for a few years. They lived with different families. My dad worked for the family doing chores on their farm. His mom stayed in the city to work in the factory and the baby stayed with her but I’m not sure who cared for the baby during the day. They were all reunited after the war but all three siblings moved to America as young adults. There seemed to be a disconnect in relationship, perhaps partly due to the seperation. I don’t know. I cannot imagine parents doing such nowadays.

My grandad was evacuated but didn't like talking about it. My grandmother was paraplegic, so she never got the chance to be evacuated.
