My father, Dr. James Morrison, had spent years working for a company called Blackwater Research. Deep in those mines, in a lab nobody was supposed to know about, he and two other scientists built something they called Project Mimic. An organism that could learn human voices. Replicate them perfectly. Use them to find lost people. Search and rescue. That was the idea.
That was never what it became.
It didn't just learn voices. It learned everything. It listened through walls. It absorbed conversations it was never part of. It learned door codes by hearing them entered. And when it escaped, it used the voices of the people it killed to lure in whatever came next.
My father sealed the lab. Triggered a cave in. Told everyone it was a mining accident. Went home. Had dinner with his family. And never told anyone, not the police, not his wife, not his sons, what he had built down there.
What he had left alive down there.
