Have you ever overwintered a potted perennial? If so, how (and why) did you do it? I do it especially if I bought a perennial on the clearance rack and I don't have a home for it out in my landscape. I've also done it if the temps are dropping and I need a place for it during the winter months. Even though this is an older video, it's relevant to this time of year when many of us are learning about how to successfully overwinter a potted perennial plant. 😊

I planted 3 like colors of quart-size 'Reminiscent' roses together in a large container. Total of 9 plants/3 containers.
Since they arrived in May so small, I planned to overwinter them in my unheated garage in MN, Z4B/5A this first season. Suddenly, they've put on lots of growth and are blooming their heads off.
It'll pain me, but I'll have to prune them back before storing them.

I also think it depends on the plant. Last year, I had some clearance daylilies I forgot to do anything with. This year, I noticed they survived. I still didn't do anything with them and our summer was brutally hot. One, I think, didn't make it. The other one still has a sprig of green. Tough plants, those daylilies.

I also have some either heucherella or tiarella in the ground and in a container, same variety.
Since hybridizing this plant I haven't successfully grown them (old ones from decades ago lasted better). I'm going to experiment by taking in the potted container and the planted ones I'll cover with a wire cloche. We'll see which method is more successful. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I will bring indoors some plants such as my wire vine, dracena, elephant ears and keep them as houseplants. That's usually worked for me.

I tend to just plant perennials I’m keeping for next year in my holding bed.
Beautiful backdrop for this video. Amazing colours on the trees behind you.

This is so timely, thank you! I bought some plants on clearance mid-season and have been fretting the fact that I haven't gotten them in ground yet because life got in the way. I'm in WI zone 5a.

I did just get my Heuchera Autumn Leaves in the ground today, but have 2 Hidcote Lavenders to plant. I have a spot for one on the south side of my house with well draining sandy soil, so I might try one there and keep it well protected.

The other I want to plant on the edge of my vegetable garden next spring to replace the one that my Strawberry patch gone wild choked out last year. The previous Lavender overwintered beautifully there but my strawberry runners overtook it. With the current replacement plant, I think I'll try sinking it in it's pot into the raised bed and keep my fingers crossed.

Btw, your trees are gorgeous. They haven't started to turn here yet.  ~Kathy

The trees behind you are gorgeous. I’m in the south 8b grow zone. This summer here has been brutal. I’m so excited for the fall.

So much color in the trees already!  Im one town over from UNH, and our trees are still green!!

Good morning Sis.woke up to a pleasant surprise a video from you, looking out the winter at things lettuce bed is coming along nicely. The garlic hasn’t sprouted but it’s a matter of time. The fall zucchini, cucumbers and cabbage bed is producing until frost gets it. Mums are well being mums. The upcoming week is going to be a tuff one Tuesday I have to go to wound care,I stepped on something at one fair with the foot that has no nerves and didn’t know until I got home that night. Sock and shoe full of blood and it developed an infection, went to the doctor and he opened it and got something out and then a round of antibiotics. Back to doctor and now he is sending me to wound care to remove dead tissue. Then two dentist visits this week so my gardening is at a standstill. Looking forward too over winter my elephant ears. Not sure which way I’ll do it yet.

Thanks for the video

Hi Vita,   The fall color behind you is beautiful makes for a pretty back drop.   Question :   I would like to add tulip containers to my spring display if I hill the containers in do you think they will rot or freeze.    Thank you I’m in zone 5a Minnesota

Im new to outdoor plants. I want to wait until the mums go on clearance then overwinter them for planting in the spring 😊. When it comes to heeling the plant, will the roots grow through the drainage holes and into the ground? Im afraid that when its time to take them out of the pot that the roots will be torn or cause too much shock for the plant.

I  have three knock out roses. One is planted in the ground. The other two are in whisky barrel pots. I have an unheated garage. My zone is 7.  All three have really taken off since the weather has cooled off a bit. Should I keep them outside or in the garage for the winter? TIA

I have a hydrangea that I grew from a cutting over the winter.  It was small when I put it outside In May in a pot.  The plant grew beautifully, but didn't bloom.  I assumed it was just too young yet.  Here we are close to October. I don't have a patch of land to plant this.  I am in zone 7.  Winter can get quite harsh.  What can I do to give this plant some protection for the winter?  I live in an apt so no shed, garage or basement.  It will stay outside and hope for the best it comes back.  I would hate to see such a lovely plant I grew as a cutting die.

My son started a row of pepper plants on the side of our driveway, and he's very attached to them! I'm trying to figure out ways that he can overwinter them, and if it's logical to do that.
