गठबंधन की राजनीति कई दशक तक भारतीय राजनीति की वास्तविकता बन गई थी। इसका सिलसिला कांग्रेस के कमजोर होने से शुरू हुआ । पहले राज्यों में फिर केंद्र में। कुछ दशक बाद मतदाता ने इस व्यवस्था को बदलने का निर्णय लिया। तो राज्यों में पूर्ण बहुमत की सरकारें बनने लगीं। मतदाता ने तीस साल बाद केंद्र में भी पूर्ण बहुमत की सरकार बनाई । गठबंधन तो बहुत बने पर चले कम। गठबंधन न चलने में मुख्य कारण बना एक सर्वमान्य नेतृत्व। जिस गठबंधन में ऐसा नेतृत्व था वह चला जिसमें नहीं था वह नहीं चला।



Coalition politics became a reality of Indian politics for several decades. Its rise began with the weakening of the Congress—first in the states and later at the Centre.

After a few decades, voters decided to change this political arrangement. Full-majority governments began to emerge in the states. Thirty years later, voters also gave the country a full-majority government at the Centre.

Many coalitions were formed, but few lasted. The key factor behind the failure of many coalitions was the absence of universally accepted leadership. Coalitions that had such leadership survived, while those that did not failed.
