I worked the night shift at a hospital for many years. That way I could cook dinner, help with homework and be home in time in the morning to take them to school. The same problem in hospitals. Lots of work including births and deaths and shootings happen at night, but the staffing is lower and very little recognition occurs.

I worked night shift at a plant, docking and moving trailers when loaded. Never miss a night during 16 months. When the plant had back up when the product line was broken the drivers had to wait. One of them told me once, you’ve been lazy. Not a question. The supervisor finally gave my job to a hostler that maneuvered to have it. The problem is that he couldn’t sleep during the day. One day I was picking up a loaded trailer doing regional routes, he asked me if I wanted the night shift back. No thanks! He quit.

This reminds me of the time , I worked nights at a hotel. 10 pm till 7am. We got robbed of a few flat screened televisions. It happened two hours before we came on duty, but we got the blame! Even though they were shown leaving the building with them. We should have stopped the robbery, before! We came on duty? It was hushed up. But everyone knew. How many people we had on duty at night? 3 at the most.

Corporate America, rewarding the incompetent while penalizing the gifted, premoniting the unqualified to their highest level of incompetence over those vastly superior in every way. It's amazing we still are in business. Karma doesn't always find its way where politics are concerned. Love to know how much damage has occurred and money was lost due to this practice of who you know rather than what you know. Sadly bullshit over brilliance is how Corporate management works in the majority of cases.

Every time I hear stories like this, I don't regret leaving IT. The retirement company I worked for out of college had just been hacked by a group from Turkey. My first job was to rebuild the whole thing. As soon as I did, they handed it off to a 3rd party, who didn't do their job well enough and all sites they hosted for borked good! my hands were clean. I laughed good on that one.

This story also reminds me of being an E3 and having to deal with E5s who had no fucking clue how to do our job. Sgt Childs...
