Uncovering the truth behind one of the most iconic mountain bike trails in the South of Scotland - Ae Forest Red Route... Is the classic Ae Forest Red Route still a thriving UK trail center benchmark, or is it showing its age? Join me for a full, raw trail ride featuring live, on-bike commentary through every technical climb, rocky descent, and man-made feature, leading to the ultimate verdict at the end.

The History: Ae Forest & The 7stanes Legacy
The Ae Line isn't just another red trail—it holds a major place in Scottish mountain biking history. Developed as part of the legendary 7stanes network across Dumfries & Galloway and the Scottish Borders, Ae Forest helped pioneer purpose-built trail center riding in the UK during the early 2000s.

Known for its stone sculpture (the Ae Stane) and rugged terrain, the Ae Forest Red Route earned a reputation as a proper, physical trail center loop. Featuring technical rock gardens, fast singletrack, and steep forest climbs, it set the benchmark for classic UK red-grade trails. Decades after its creation, this ride examines how the trail has evolved, how Forestry and Land Scotland maintains the features, and whether it still holds up against modern, flow-focused trail networks.

The loss of the Ae cafe and bike shop has been a huge blow to the community and although the building has been deemed by FLS to be “end of life” they have been actively attempting to procure some kind of replacement. Our Ae bike association has reached out to FLS with several workable proposals to be able to provide some facilities beyond the portaloos but so far this has come to nothing. On another note we have recently started FLS led “trailfairies” style trail maintenance sessions and they will make a difference in the longer term. As Kev said earlier I believe the first section of trail you missed is largely open and I will take up the obvious issue of diversion signs with FLS today. The first section “rats slippy one” has been closed since storm Arwen but recently the felling contractor has remove the worst of the fallen trees and we hope to see some progress on that over the winter.
All in all thank you for highlighting Ae, warts and all and keep safe on the trails 👍

As someone who has recently come in to the mountain biking world from other sports, I find it slightly surprising how great we have it for essentially no outlay. E.g. comparing it with golf. If I want to play golf, I must pay either a yearly membership fee of £500+ or pay upwards of £100, on average, for a round of golf on top courses in the area.
With that being said, in the borders we have world class trail and we get to ride them for FREE!
I guess there’s 2 points to my ramblings.
1- mountain bikers are potentially under appreciative, or ever expectant, of what they actually get for the outlay (or lack thereof).
2 - trail centres and places like golfie should 100% have a donation box or even just a QR code to scan for riders to donate on the day.
I know I’d happily pay £5 or £10 every time I rock up to golfie / glentress / inners.
Let’s say there’s 50-100 riders at golfie on average per day, if even 10% pay £10 each, that soon racks up to pay for additional materials, staff, machines etc.

Just a thought.

I love trail centres that have the more back to nature feel rather than an over manicured piste. They are a nice link between managed parks and real mountain biking on the fells and moors. Dalbeatie and Mabie have the same appeal and should be ridden more.

Went to Ae last week as I was working not far away and took my bike. It's a proper old school trail centre designed for 2000s bikes. I ride a 140mm travel lightweight Cube ebike and it was the perfect ride for those trails.

I was the only person there on a sunny Thursday and actually very glad that there's nothing on the red route to kill me.

I was smiling the whole way round. Ebike for the win on the fire roads. Lightweight for the twisty stuff. Some kind soul had been round and trimmed the overgrowth too.

It is a damn shame that the place has lost its cafe and bike shop but I would still say it's well worth a visit for those riding bikes not sofas...

Wow that place has changed so much since I last rode it, the last section of Omega in particular - used to be all through the trees and more a straight line. Good vid man!

Got such a soft spot for Ae. Riding there last summer and a pine marten ran alongside me on one of the climbs - pretty magical ! The off-piste stuff is rather gnar too ;-)

I went to Ae last summer before my Trial Leader assessment, it was a brutally hot day which did kill the enjoyment a bit especially with all the fire roads and open climbs! I'll have to go back and give it another chance!

Did all of the 7-stanes trails in succession a couple of years ago with my dogs in tow. They were visibly neglected but essentially, good old mtb riding for the majority of time. Empty mid week, which was nice and some good overnight parking spots in the forests for a small fee. Glentress looks to have made some significant investment in improving their facilities. In isolation, each trail aren’t worth the trip in my opinion, but I’d recommend to anyone to try them all out across a few days.

I ended up buying an xc bike after years and years of DH and enduro. Pretty much every red is fun to ride now. Only had a couple of trail centres in the south that are lacking any decent riding. Being under biked has made everything so much fun

Wow, rode these years ago and loved it. Great mix of trails and do-able on rigid singlespeeds 👍

Used to love a trip to AE. Must go back again. Thanks J

Great review! I think these places like Ae and Pitmedden big fire roads and uppy downy reds are amazing fun on the e bike! My SL rise is an absolute blast and I’ve had the best days recently at these xc style empty places!

Great video Jamie ❤. Ae forest is my guilty pleasure. Trail centres like this and Mabie forest up the road is the reason I went for a 150/140 on my ebike. Blasting round the reds and blues at both these trail centres are a great way to blow the cobwebs off when I haven't been out for a while due to work commitments. I still have so much fun on these types of mixed surface trail centres. The off piste stuff is a bonus also. It's a shame that the outlying centres aren't getting the same support as they were before, and you're right in saying that they will get boring if you're overbiked! The first part of the closed red was great fun with the boardwalk sections and the punchy climbs, which definitely warmed up the legs for the rest of the trail. Here's hoping FLS can find a way to bring these wonderful areas back to their former glory 🤞

100% agree with your synopsis here. Rode the red on my trail bike a few months back. A few good sections but came away feeling it just alright. There has been some work over the years but some sections, like Granny Green love and the climb out of it, have looked like that for a long time. Won’t rush back but I’ll definitely be back.

I rode Ae I think 2022 on a 7-stanes road trip. I seem to remember that the black option was quite short, & had quite a long section of elevated north shore but that was closed even back then. I did it on my 150 bike & thought it was great. One of the climbs was very tough.

Haven't done AE for a while, just got a new bike on order defo going to hit the stanes again

I went there last year for a works social mtb event. Was my first time riding in Scotland and I loved it. I was on a Stumpy Evo. Would love to go back with my eeb and session all the downhill stuff.

I have tried Ae a few times now and every time i seem to get heavy rain! Better planning required i think!

I dont think you missed much avoiding the black. I did it a few months back and it was so overgrow (and saggy from the rain) I couldnt get past walking apeed for most of it.

Its definetly worth looping back round to get the shredder at the end although it is a bit of a dig out if you are already hanging!

This video has definitely inspired me to keep an eye on the weather and attempt to get a dry day down there before the winter arrives.

I think your comments are pretty fair. I loved the 7 Stanes in the mid 2000s when I was back living in Dumfries for a while. It was Mabie that got me into mountain biking. There are some huge questions for Dumfries local council for example who have set aside over £80 million for a very questionable solution to flooding. So yeah, while not really wanting to get into local politics, these trails still have a lot to offer certain riders but so need a little TLC.
