After giyuu’s sister died he said that it was a demon, because of that he was deemed insane, so he was sent to south park, where he was made to drink “medicine” which was actually meth coffee, he was also forced to change his name because “giyuu” was a very strange name then he eventually escaped to the nearby mountains, then was found by sabito and urokodaki, they made him dye his hair black because a blond person walking the streets of japan will be very strange, then he trained with sabito until the final selection came, where sabito died, then after sabito died he decided to change his name back to giyuu, now he is the water hashira.
