In 2005, 16-year-old Craig Hutto was on vacation in Florida with his family, wading out to fish with his older brother Brian, when something bumped his leg. Seconds later, a bull shark latched onto him and pulled him under. Brian swam straight into the attack, grabbed his brother, and fought to drag him back toward shore while the shark refused to let go. Craig tried to pry the shark’s mouth open with his hands. Brian punched it again and again until it finally released him. Craig survived, but the attack cost him his leg. Today, I’m sitting down with both brothers to hear what really happened in the water that day.

I realize our conversation made it difficult to hear what type of a shark attacked him. It was a bull shark. We also mentioned that in the description of the video.

Great interview. I’m a little surprised it wasn’t mentioned what a hero his brother is and that he saved his life! The fact he went straight to his aide and then dragged him with shark attacking all the way to the beach. To then punched the shark off him. What a fantastic brother. He deserved a bravery medal🎖️

I had walked to a sandbar at Hunting Island, SC. The tide came in and it was close to sunset. I started to swim for shore and the panic I felt was overwhelming, but I am not the strongest swimmer and didn’t want to splash or kick. I made it in but hearing this story and knowing that premonition I had that evening, I must have had angels surrounding me.

What a wonderful story of survival. I have no doubt that his brother had super human strength from all the adrenaline. Plus his love for his brother gave him super human strength. His brother didn’t leave him, he fought to save him. He’s a hero!

What a hero the big brother was . Dragged his 17 year old brother with a shark attached all the way into shore. To be where he it today and rise above loosing his leg makes the younger brother a hero also.

Amazing hero his brother is to have fought so hard to get hi m on the beach with the shark still hanging on and having to fight it off! Then telling him to suck it up and get on with his life! Best advice ever! So glad Craig got tough and made it through all the agonizing surgeries and mental suffering! Both hero’s and great interview, thank you!

One dimension of this story is that of how important it is being an impactful sibling. There is nothing better in life than knowing your siblings have your back, whether it's laughing together or dishing out some necessary smack. God gives us the opportunity to nurture this relationship and it saddens me when I see so many who don't appreciate this gift. These two brothers have positive and powerful messages. ❤

EMTs refused to give Craig a drink of water as consuming anything by mouth before emergency surgery presents a critical, life-threatening risk. First responders must strictly enforce an NPO (nothing by mouth) protocol as there is a high risk of vomiting under anesthesia which can easily enter the lungs. The IV line delivers fluids directly to the bloodstream without entering the stomach but it does not relieve the thirst triggers of a person's mouth and throat. Heavy bleeding triggers a powerful thirst alarm.

Craig, you have to know that your survival story is so incredibly inspiring! The amount of mental and physical strength you need to overcome a painful, traumatic, near death experience is immense. Vividly remember this story for number of reasons. Primarily because I fished San Blas and had a similar experience with "sharky waters". Same spot, early 90's when the area was less developed. Tempted to cross to sanbar to cast out when I reconsidered after my Fl native spidey sense told me NO. Not 5mins later, standing in same spot, something snatched my cut bait so hard that I almost lost my entire rig and my footing. I know it was a shark, it took everything including my desire to fish that area!

I was attacked by a dobberman pitcher dog . He grabbed my leg and pulled me down and was chewing my leg shaking it viciously !! The damage done was horrible and the doctor's said it looked like a shark attacked it. There was a 6 inch area on my shin that there wasn't any flesh to sew together. The injuries covered 9 inches of my leg. Everyone told me not to look at it because they were afraid I would go into shock if I saw it. When I was able to finally get the color police photos of my leg in 10×10 sizes, I was shocked and broke down crying because it was horrific !! I can't imagine how horrible it would be for a shark to attack a person !!! 😮

I was thinking what a regular occurrence it is that they’re just happens to be a bunch of doctors and nurses near crisis, but then it struck me - you hear about that so often because those other people who live to tell the story 💕
