There's an assumption about what a groove is, but what it really is is not what you think it is. Most people who learn anything about music learn about harmony. Music is a spectrum with harmony at one end and rhythm at the other. For a harmonist music consists of beat, and your rhythm is forced by when the chord changes. Few harmonists can phrase over changes. Those who know about rhythm - James Brown, Fela Kuti - play one chord grooves because now your rhythm can be freed up from the changes because there are none. So rhythm and harmony are in competition for brain time, and, possibly, for brain space - the more you learn about harmony the more your rhythmic ability shrinks. What makes rhythm interesting is cross-rhythms and cross-grooves. That is you don't want to slot in with other people if you lose your micro-timing. Cross-rhythms and cross-grooves are boldly on display in Miles Davis' Bitches' Brew, and in much of the blues of Muddy Waters which inspired it. If you listen to Bitches' Brew and don't find it interesting you have no sense of rhythm. That's it. For someone who's interested in developing their rhythm, here's an exercise - play with a metronome. For harmonists this is boring, the beat of the metronome is boring. For a rhythmist the whole process is different. Here you are adjusting your micro-timing and the repeated riff you are playing until the metronome sounds interesting. That's it. Make the metronome sound interesting by making the repeated pattern you are playing do that. You may have to adjust your pattern, you may have to adjust your timing, but make that click sound interesting. Once you do that you have a groove, and it's the only time you can say you have a groove. Listen back to your riff, can you do this for ten minutes without getting bored. Now you have a good riff. It's about more than nodding your head, it's about feeling it with your whole body. Does it make you want to move as much off the beat as on. Another easy to improve your rhythm is to listen to Bitches' Brew until you find it interesting. Listen to Muddy Waters, James Brown (post Cold Sweat), Fela Kuti until you find them interesting, until you stop listening to and for harmony. Keep at it until you really feel rhythm. Not like a harmonist who thinks they have a groove, because that is not a groove. But like a rhythmist who can make you move different parts of your body at different times in relation to the beat. Wow!

Fun!!  One of my favorite musicians, live on stage, once had to awaken the drummer out of his loll.  It was fun to witness.
