Big thanks to this video - just picked up a used 1992 MTD yard tiller for $100 - changed oil, put in 90 ethanol free gas, new v belt, new plug, new filter all for less than $30 bucks - it would crank but the cord on a occasion would not catch - this is on a 5hp engine - followed this video - disassembled the clutch - there was dirt and oil gunked up inside - cleaned everything real well, polished the 6 bearings - applied some light compressor oil - wow fixed - Tiller runs like new for a 31 year old machine --- I work in healthcare so don't know much about small engine repair.. Again big thumbs up !!!

Wood splitter wouldn't engage when pulling rope. Didnt know about oiling the clutch through the hole.  Used WD40. Spins much better and bearing engaging great. Learned a lot. Thank you

This video is gold, thanks for taking your time to show other people how things work !

2:59 Another option is a very large set of channel lock pliers. Pad the jaws with tape so you don't mar the starter clutch and then use the pliers to unscrew the starter clutch. Use a screwdriver or prybar on the blower fan to stop it from turning *just like the guy in the video said 😉. The hammer and screwdriver method can damage the ears on the starter clutch or snap them right off if you're unlucky.

my grandfather recently passed away, and he had a tiller with a newer but familiar design to this one. we used to always use it to grow a garden every year. I was working on it get it running again after 10 years of it sitting. I got it started once and then i couldn't get the starter clutch to engage with the engine.
Just wanted to say thanks and I am thankful for this video.

I never would have dared trying something like this without this video- thanks! Fixed my Bearcat woodchipper in 5 mins. In case this helps anyone  else, in my case didnt even need to remove the clutch from flywheel, the little plate came off with the screen, so that saved a lot work.

Thanks for the video! I bought a Mclane edger with a Briggs and Stratton , 1970’s model from a guy for 40 bucks. He had trouble starting it because the recoil wasn’t working properly. I’ve used it for about a year now by tapping the coil housing to get the clutch to bite. But after watching your video, all I did was take the cover off and spray some WD-40 into that little hole in the clutch and it works great.  Thanks again, now I don’t have to beat the side of my 40 dollar edger anymore 😂

Your a life saver, I was able to finally get my rototiller going following your video

GREAT video! Direct and to the point. Followed you step by step and was able to get my vintage Power Rake up and running on the 2nd pull 😊👍🏻

Thank you for taking the time to help beginner small engine guys like myself

Great video, after watching I went and bought the new part for $23 and fixed it myself in about 45 minutes. Got it back up and running and I am sure saved at least a $100.

Thanks, your video helped be sort out the problems with my Rover  ES/ X recoil mechanism. Thanks again Alan

This solved my issue in no time at all, thank you!

Thanks man !  Looks like clutch is out there on briggs site to buy also for 30 $
