In three years, more than a thousand people have been arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into France. They are called "mules" because they carry the drugs in suitcases or even in their stomachs. Flávia, 23, was arrested in March in Paris with five kilos of cocaine. She was to receive nine thousand reais (Brazilian currency) to deliver the merchandise.
Flávia said she received the suitcases from strangers and told her lawyer that she knew she was transporting something illegal, but she didn't imagine it was cocaine or the quantity. Sentenced to 15 months, she also received a fine of 50,000 euros and was banned from entering France for ten years.
French police discovered that six out of ten mules intercepted in the country come from Brazil. Traffickers even send several people on the same flight to overwhelm the authorities and even denounce a mule to distract the police. Others carry the cocaine inside their bodies.
