I use a Ludwig super sensitive and have started not using the muffler knob and instead using a black folder clip and a piece of leather at the edge of the rim and it acts like a noise gate.  I love it.  Learned that trick from Rick Diore

Perfect timing!!

My tuning skills are terrible :)

I tune in fifths: bass drum approximately E, floor tom B, small tom F#, snare drum A or higher :D Works for me.

I love the resonant bell like tones Elvin Jones had on his Tama drums (the ones with the triangular lugs).

This is the video I have been waiting for.

You might consider doing a video on your stick choice. I used the hickory Vater Fusion with a wood tip for years, but switched to the thinner and lighter Ball Cymbal Stick, which I find fits better for trio playing and makes my cymbals sound better as well. I think stick selection is an often overlooked aspect of our gear. Just a suggestion. Very good video, thanks.

Nice. I didn't like the Aquarian Vintage II either.  But please try the Aquarian Vintage single ply, Medium. Absolute KILLER on toms.  Been using them for over 20 years for Jazz and they smoke Ambassadors to me.

I was told that both heads tuned the same = max resonance and sustain. Then, in my freshman year of college, I repeated that claim and an older 30 year okd student said, " I disagree!". Then I heard his floor tom. Rang foreven. I said, how do you get that sustain. He looked at me znd ssid, bottom head tighter! And then played the pitches. He wad right. I changed my thinking on sustain even though the reasoning seemed correct with both heads the same. Tune this tightly, it is a bit irrelevant because you are getting well above the most resonant pitch for that drum. That's why jazz guys tune for articulation and not resonance. Mostly, but not always. Steve Maxwell claims better projection in the house with a lower pitch on the bottom head. I don't care for the feel or sound of that behind the kit. He may be right though.

Very nice no bullshit video! Very similar approach to my tuning other than the pitch between drums. Mine from floor up is minor third from floor to rack, then a whole step up to snare. If I can't play "a love supreme" they are out of tune hahaha. I like the darker more dissonant sound when they are like this. It gives a lot of interesting melodic choices that all feed into each other a bit since they are close together

Great video! Tuning takes knowledge of what sound you want to create. I play Sonor Delites. They are "lively" drums. I put a few cotton balls in them to achieve a clear high pitch, but not too much sustained ring. Thank you for posting.

Do you ever encounter issues when you start tuning with the key, the other rods that were once finger tight get loose?

I've always wondered why you use nylon tips. Do you like the cymbal sound or is it just the added durability?

Very interesting but what do you do when you find a 14" converted tom tom to a bass drum emad make a 16" but not suitable for 14" smaller but companies do not consider anything smaller than 16" suitable for a bass drum help needed.

You said at the end the pitches were F A and C,  but im struggling to tell which drum is F, etc, can you clarify which note is on which drum in the end?
