The reason a lot of songs sung in French and English won in the early years is because it's a language a bunch of countries speak and understand, and back in the early days of the contest you HAD to sing in your native language.

Johnny Logan is not called Mr Eurovision for nothing. He won twice as a singer and a third time as songwriter. He still performs sublemly and my fafourite Eurovision song is Hold me now. Even though i'm from the Netherlands.

My favourite thing about watching these type of videos are people getting shocked about Celine and ABBA and also Lorde

Fun fact: Carola from Sweden in 1991 had a big fan that blew in her hair when she sang about being caught in a storm. After that, many others wanted to borrow the fan and now many people want it to blow their hair when they sing. In Sweden we call it a Carola fan.

"Ein bisschen Frieden" is one of my all time favorites. A song wishing for peace in a Europe divided. Nicole's single is still the only Eurovision entry to top the sales charts in every territory it was released in.

Ofcourse it's a lot different for me, as a European from Belgium (we speak French, Dutch and German) so I know pretty much every song by head from hearing them on the radio all the time with my grandparents and parents. So many memories :) (Ein bisschen Frieden 1982 winner still tears me up)

Regarding 1969: there were no regulations in the competition to handle a tie since it had never happened before. And it just so happened to be a four-way tie, which made a mockery of the competition and caused a huge boycot during the 1970 competition in protest. Afterwards, the tie-breaker was decided based on the country received the most 12-pointers, or if equal, 10-pointers, etc. This basically favored polarizing songs that some people really loved (leading to most earned points being in the higher votes) as opposed to songs that were very liked overall but didn't quite receive the highest point-earners (basically relying steady mass appeal). Nowadays, the tiebreaker rules lean towards the country that receives the most points from the most different countries.
As for why the Netherlands hosted? We have this weird Eurovision habit of hosting when we don't really win, another country cannot host for whatever reason, or there are mass pandemics going on.

Secret Garden’s song Nocturne (Norway, 1995) does have lyrics, but very little. Just 24 words in total. It’s the song with the least amount of lyrics in Eurovision. And it’s a very relaxing and amazing song too. Great reaction! 😄

The raw emotions and pain in Jamala's voice will echo for years to come ❤️
May not be a popular opinion but 1944 is one of the best to win the contest
And my personal favourite song :3

@esthermonme4856 4 years ago

Johnny Logan actually won 3 times :D He won 2 times as a singer and 1 time he wrote the winning song for another artist. He is known as Mr. Eurovision because of this xD

One thing that changed the competition and the entries a bit is that in the end of the 90’s (was it 97 or 98?) they changed the rules and made allowed to sing in another language than of your country’s. After that, many chose to sing in English.

You should look into some of the back story on some of these songs, fascinating!! Dana International first transgender winner; Yugoslavia fell apart as a country soon after winning; Loreen, Swedish and African descent; 16 year old winner from Belgium, lots of double entendres for gay rights and protest against homophobia -Ding-a-Dong! Jamala 1944 the year after the Crimea invasion… and now Stefania!! (I routed for Stefania since before they became the country’s selection!) Fascinating back stories.

@basquat76 4 years ago

Ireland pretty much owning the 90's is why they change the rule from having to sing in your own language to singing in English if you want.

as always I said in another reactions
these is the Most Important act in the 70s decade (not only in Eurovisión)
ABBA gives to Sweden their first victory in almost 20 years
"Waterloo" is a disruptive song in your time, a fantastic Masterpiece under three minutes
and ABBA perfomance was iconic, and still now is the Best in all Eurovisión history (voted in 2005, to the 50th anniversary of Eurovisión)

and in September 2021, after 47 years of these victory, and after 39 years of the last song recorded, ABBA comes back again with two amazing new songs, and a full album "Voyage" in last November 2021 that is a worldwide success Now

ABBA is in another level of the rest, is in the Podium of the Greatest Groups in músic history, as the same level as BEATLES... and even someone more like Beach Boys, for their influences in modern music

1965 France Gall: you have to know the story of this singer in France and especially know that the author of this song is one of the greatest French authors and singers and very famous.

After Lordi's win with their pyrotechnics, lots of other contestants also adopted huge stage shows. And Serbian won the next year because of their low-key approach...
