As a UX designer watching my role slowly fade away from relevance because product managers can "make good enough prototypes" using Claude, this hits hard. Still 100k in sudent debt btw, so switching careers is sickening
Welcome to the club, mate. I lost my job in February, but I was DOGEd. I'm 62, though, and who the hell wants to hire a 62-year-old developer? My wife still has a good job in the medical field and my 401K is pretty big, so I decided to retire. Best decision of my life. My son graduated cum laude in May with a bachelor's degree in computer science from one of the best programs in the country and he hasn't been able to find a job. He wasn't allowed to use AI for school, but now every job is demanding AI expertise. I'm worried for him.
if I'd have to start again, I'd go into any kind of restoration job: art, furniture, even masonry (living in Europe, that's probably more relevant for this continent, though)
You need some luck in this world. I got laid off last year, at age 67, from my tech consulting job ($200K salary). Fortunately, I had already saved enough money to retire. The corporate severance just gave me a nice cash cushion. If I actually needed to work, I’d be screwed.
My first advice : Study how transformers work and build something with ML or LLM. And I'm not talking about a shallow, Udemy level. Go deep. Understand it at a deep mathematical level. Start with Chip Huyens books. It will open up more perspectives and give a peace of mind. My second advice: Forget about the concept of a job and start creating your own opportunities. The job is essetially a homework someone gives you to solve a business problem for a small share of the market value represented by the solution in return. Deconstruct its meaning and start building from there.
Just graduated this July in Computer Science and dang , getting even an internship is hard as hell and requirements, everything dev ops cloud db everything not basics but being skilled on all of them and they are paying what 100-200$ per month. I guess I choosed the wrong field I should have gone for some field work something that only human hands can do . Confused as hell
Data jobs are getting wiped out. 6mo ago I would've said infra, but Claude is so good at that now as well. I guess I'd start building things myself. So tech entrepreneur. With your experience, you probably know what companies need.
Swe for +25 years here. Got laid off in 2023 after CEO heard about the marvels of AI. Thankfully I had a side hustle with a saas app, I decided to concentrate on that while I was looking for a new job. All jobs expect to hire a vibe coder now, they want you to use AI even tho all it does is drag your work behind. I'm an obsolete luddite now. AI coding sucks! I keep building my apps manually. Meanwhile my competitor's software are full of bugs and I keep building stable new features. If you don't use AI, you got an edge, at least if you work for yourself. Being on the field long enough to have seen so many hyped tech come and go, I'm not jumping on this wagon now. Screw it
I Was a Tech Worker for 20 Years. Then AI Happened.
