For centuries, the most powerful men in France poured their ambition into one castle — demolishing it, rebuilding it, transforming it generation after generation. At its peak, it outshone Versailles itself. Almost 800 years later, Chantilly is finally revealing all of its secrets. 🏰
There is a castle in France that once made Versailles feel ordinary.
For nearly 800 years, Chantilly has been home to the cousins and sons of kings — each generation demolishing what came before and building something more extraordinary in its place.
It was here that Louis II de Bourbon-Condé, cousin of the Sun King, summoned André Le Nôtre — the greatest landscape architect in French history — to design a park of 215 hectares. And it was here that Le Nôtre invented something the world had never seen: fountains capable of running 24 hours a day, fed by three kilometres of underground pipelines and pools built using techniques that had no precedent.
Versailles took notice.
Then came the stables — the largest princely stables ever built in Europe. 186 metres long. 18 metres of ceiling height. A structure so monumental it was designed not for horses, but to project absolute power.
And then, almost everything was demolished. And rebuilt again.
How did Chantilly survive centuries of destruction, revolution and neglect? What engineering genius lay behind Le Nôtre's revolutionary water systems? And how did one prince transform a ruined castle into the greatest private collection of ancient paintings outside the Louvre?
Almost 800 years of secrets. Finally uncovered.
