Using Rotary Tattoo Pens After Using Traditional Coil Tattoo Machines For Years

As a tattoo artist who’s been tattooing since 2001, I started my career using coil machines. Around 2006, many artists ~~myself included~~ started incorporating rotary tattoo machines as well.

As time has gone on, this has evolved to using pen tattoo machines as well as wireless pens and machines that run off separate batteries.

Here are my thoughts and advice on all that, along with what I am currently using and why.

It is the best explanation I ever hear about rotaries. I feel the exact same way. Sometimes I learn more about what I need from my coil machine using a rotary. Great smart content .

I learned on a rotary ..home made. Pushed ink with that machine for like 2 years ..then switched to a coil machine . was told your not a real tattoo artist ..because yiur using a rotary ..tought myself to use a coil machine ..now 20 years after i put tattooing aside. I have picked up a few different tyoes of rotary machines ..very big difference from a coil machine. I could never do soild traditinal work with a rotary ..always a prison style black n grey ish type of style . this is gonna be a hard change ..i never thought i would say i enjoy a coil over a rotary ..i enjoy a line that a coil pushes ..but enjoy how much more control i have with a rotary ...stay tuned 😂

Great video & super curious about the steel driver now. Loving direct drive longer stroke rotaries these days. All the nuances of each machine are so interesting & informative of each other.

Have you tried the Q Tattoo machines? They’re magnetic rotary motors with swapable armatures- they seem like a very interesting concept!

Would you recommend against using a more budget brand pen (like a CNC Kronos or Ambition Soldier 520 pro) for doing bolder traditional work? I've heard Bishop Power Wand is the most recommended but I def don't have Bishop Power Wand money atm 😂 Bold lining is my big concern atm

I'll Never start using those new fairy wand tattoo pens. Coil machines are all I'll ever use. These new tattoo pens are for millennials who dont know anything about tattooing. And thats the cold hard truth.

you may want to return your critical shorty, should be getting at least 5 hours out of a charge. I get upwards of 6 or 7

i used coil guns 10 year and test pen machine first time and then i fight all my old coil guns to trash, about 7000$ and buy only pen machines, lot better no stupid setup alltime lot better use and all my tattoo work lines and shades have now lot lot better because pen machine have lot better handle and use. newer again use any pre-history cave men shit coil machine.
