In July 2026, an avalanche high on Broad Peak swept a roped party of ten climbers down the face in seconds, killing Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja - the most famous high-altitude mountaineer of his generation - along with elite Sherpa guides, a Pakistani guide, an Omani record-holder, an American client, and a Chinese climber. Satellite trackers recorded the party's catastrophic falls minute by minute, and neighboring K2 expeditions abandoned their own summit pushes to help recover the bodies. This is the story of how the man who conquered all fourteen 8,000-meter peaks died on a mountain most had already fled.

They made a mistake by going up. Period. Nims pushed it too far, and it's not the first close call he had. He is superhuman, but even superhumans do not matter much when an avalanche comes down. I remember the Everest avalanche-landslide that killed 19 people at EBC on April 25th - I was there, I survived, and the famous video shot by Jost Kobusch, who is a friend, will tell you how devastating it was. I was also at EBC on April 18th, when a serac came down from the Western Shoulder and killed 16 Sherpas-high altitude workers.
We, climbers, do not seek danger, we go to dangerous places and try our best to avoid danger. Read my article

But Nimsdai made a mistake and thought he could walk-in-the-park up Broad peak, after G2. Unfortunately, many people now write his name "NIMSDIE"... R.i.p.
