Deep in the upper Blue Mountains of Portland, Jamaica, at an elevation of roughly 4,200 feet, a strange stepped stone structure remains hidden beneath the forest.
It is approximately 72 meters wide, rises through five distinct terraces, has a flat summit platform—and, according to the LiDAR data described in this investigation, is oriented within roughly one degree of true north.
No one knows who built it.
No one knows when it was built.
And no one has ever stood on the structure to investigate it.
What makes the mystery even more unusual is that the feature appears across centuries of records. A 1543 account attributed to Franciscan friar Alonso de Herrera describes a “summit of stone that rises by steps” visible from Jamaica's northern coast. In 1817, surveyor Thomas Liddell marked a stepped feature on a map of the upper Rio Grande drainage. A 1954 aerial photograph reportedly prompted a geologist to note that the formation was “possibly man-made.” More recently, LiDAR mapping revealed a detailed five-tiered structure beneath the mountain forest.
But what is it?
Could it be a previously undocumented Taino construction? A colonial-era structure? Something connected to Jamaica's earlier inhabitants? Or is it an unusual geological formation that only appears artificial from above?
The evidence raises more questions than answers.
The surrounding landscape adds another layer to the mystery: Taino archaeological remains in the upper Rio Grande valley, mapped cave entrances, a documented petroglyph, and centuries of Maroon knowledge of the remote Blue Mountain interior.
Yet despite decades of records, the structure remains unexcavated, undated, and unresolved.
In this documentary, we examine the historical records, archaeological possibilities, geological arguments, LiDAR evidence, and unanswered questions surrounding one of Jamaica's most mysterious alleged mountain structures.
Five centuries of documentation.
One unexplained feature.
And the question of who built it is still in the mountain.
Watch until the end and decide for yourself what you think is hidden in the upper Blue Mountains.
If you are fascinated by lost archaeology, unexplained structures, Caribbean history, Taino archaeology, forgotten historical records, and mysterious places, subscribe for more investigations into the buried and unresolved history of the Caribbean.
