Fulton Sheen was ahead of his time. Committee’s are known to be highly ineffective and a waste of time and resources

Spellman was jealous, no other explanation.

This was a period of  careerism in the church. Cardinals were really acting like princes and sometimes despots. Spellman was one of those.

Sounds like Sheen was the priest and Spellmen was the politician.

Cardinal Spellman was a big believer in The Prophecies of St. Malachy , at the Conclave 1958, the pr I prophecy was the Pope would be a shepherd and mariner , Spellman hired a barge of sheep and he sailed up and down the Tiber...John the XXIII , was elected, he was The Cardinal of Venice...

I always tend to think of Cardinal Spellman as the catholic J Edgar Hoover. He was the undisputed boss of the Catholic Church in the US. Super talk (from UK).

Spellman was a homosexual who lived a double life. He was not unlike McCarrick  In February 2019, journalist and former West Point cadet Lucian K. Truscott IV published an essay in [Salon] reporting that Cardinal Spellman repeatedly groped him during an interview in 1967.

Theodore McCarrick was a protégé  of Spellman.

Francis Cardinal Spellman, late Archbishop of New York (1939-1967), was notorious for his fiscal irresponsibility in running the Archdiocese of New York.  He was short of money and came to auxiliary bishop (at the time) Fulton Sheen for cash from the Church's Missionary fund.  At that time Sheen was the National Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith (1950-1966), the Roman Catholic Church's international missions fund.  Sheen raised over $200,000,000 for catholic global missions.  Spellman demanded several million dollars from Sheen, his auxiliary bishop, from the Society's Missionary fund for New York.  Sheen declined the request, informing Cardinal Spellman that the Society for the Propagation's assets are for the needs of the Catholic Church's Missions throughout the world and are NOT his to distribute and give away as he pleased.  Sheen also had the backing of Pope Pius XII in this controversy with Cardinal Spellman.  Cardinal Spellman unleashed his revenge against Sheen with a fury that lasted "many years" by having him reassigned (exiled) to the small Diocese of Rochester, New York.

I was alawys surprised that Sheen was never made a cardinal.  Spellman was the LBJ of the RC Church.

Very interesting.  Thank you.

Interesting snippet on "On The Waterfront".  Sheen & Spellman lived in the same rectory at St. Patrick.  Spellman was his superior & he was an auxiliary.  I have been to the same rectory on a number of visits to NYC.  There are a number of creditable allegations against Spellman in the area of sex abuse.  Sheen knew of the issues and could say nothing.  I would say that Sheen made him feel guilty.  The move to Rochester was forced as a retaliation for Sheen's victory before the pope.  Spellman just bided his time & was very vindictive.

Does anyone know if it was the Spellman problems that Sheen told a reporter when asked if he'd suffered, Sheen replied, "Yes, I have suffered."?

Saints love Jesus and follow His teachings exactly. Is what makes Saints carrying The Cross and quietly enduring the heavy pressure of the world.

May God have mercy on Cardinal Spellman's soul 🙏

The Rochester years gave Archbishop Sheen the opportunity to exercise his pastoral faculties as bishop and priest.  As a Catholic school pupil in 1965 I recall when Bishop Sheen came to Buffalo, New York from Rochester and confirmed my own Confirmation sponsor at St. Mary of Sorrows Church in Buffalo, one year before I was confirmed by our local Ordinary at the time the following year.

In 1964, I was in my sophomore year of the high school which bore Cardinal Spellman's name.  In lieu of study hall, I worked as a student volunteer in the school library.  One day, I heard a commotion and peeked around the stack.  I saw Cardinal Spellman being escorted to a nearby reading area.  His aid, a monsignor, was speaking into the cardinal's ear, essentially giving him directions.  I was close enough to hear.  After the cardinal was seated, I met his eyes for a few seconds, and they were completely vacant.  I hastily pulled my head back into the stack.  Later that day, Cardinal Spellman celebrated Mass in the gym for the entire assembly of students.  That same monsignor was again at the cardinal's side, leaning into his ear the whole time, and even guiding him by a touch on his elbow.  This whole experience gave me the feeling something was not quite right.  A few years later, Cardinal Spellman passed away.

The more I delve deeper into the sexual aspects of abuse  . I find it depressing  the correlation between sexual & monetary abuse as well and how its effects on the Church and the its structure
