Karl Hanke’s rise and fall is one of the most chilling stories inside the Nazi leadership. Born in Silesia in 1903, Hanke rose quickly through Hitler’s movement thanks to his relentless ambition, political talent, and absolute loyalty to the regime. Early on he became a trusted protégé of Joseph Goebbels, serving inside the powerful Propaganda Ministry and moving through the highest Party structures in Berlin. But behind the façade of political success lay a man driven by rivalry, jealousy, and an unrestrained hunger for power. After his bitter fallout with Goebbels, Hanke was drafted into the Wehrmacht and fought under Erwin Rommel before returning to political life. Hitler rewarded him with enormous authority: Gauleiter of Lower Silesia, Oberpräsident of the province, and Reich Defense Commissioner. From Breslau, he ruled with brutality, ordering mass arrests and executions while enforcing Nazi racial policies with fanatic zeal. Locals soon came to call him the “Hangman of Breslau.” As the Red Army approached in 1945, Hanke transformed Breslau into a fortress city and sacrificed tens of thousands of civilians in a hopeless defense. Hitler praised his ruthlessness and, in his final political testament, named Hanke the last Reichsführer-SS, replacing Heinrich Himmler. But this final promotion brought no salvation. Attempting to flee disguised as an SS private, Hanke was captured near Prague and killed by Czech guards in June 1945 — dying anonymously on a rural road, far from the power he once commanded. This episode explores Karl Hanke’s path from minor bureaucrat to one of the Nazi regime’s most feared officials, and how his loyalty to a murderous system ultimately led to his violent end.
