One important thing with the blocking. Vito is positioned as the confessor and Michael is the priest. Vito is not looking at Michael, while Michael is staring directly into Vito's profile.

" I refuse to be a fool dancing on the strings held by all those big shots"! This is the best line from Vito it describes his mentality!

Vito reminds Michael, the smartest person in the picture, who the traitor would be. He has already told him, why remind him? Because he knew how tempting it is to believe your friend isn't betraying you.

"But I .... I never wanted this for you." The near apology made me almost cry. It was already over for Michael

Vito didn't get a bandleader out of a contract, he got a singer out of a contract with a bandleader.

"He finally gets to die as the one thing Life never let him fully be"...and you mean, a playful grandfather. But it is instructive to note that, with the orange rind in his mouth, he "plays" a monster to his grandson's frightened response.

The scene is a masterpiece and one of my favourites...

I read this scene just as you did. But I never considered the amazing cinematography part of it. An old, tired man - remember the multiple gunshots that he took and never fully recovered from. It never really permitted him to regain his full strength and vigor- and that incident set a Vito on downward path. The costumes also said it all - the Don dressed like a spent, drained old man and the young dapper son. Vito still possessed the cunning and experience but physically and mentally he was fading quickly. And we all know fathers and sons rarely say they love each other. It is a look, a nod, a gesture. That is our male limitation. A brief hug, a pat on the back, that “I’m proud of you son”, and a hint of a tear in the father’s eyes. As guys, we just cannot say it easily out loud.

I never saw the empty bicycle, the bicycle that Michael perhaps learned how to ride on. The bicycle is alone, sad and lifeless without a youngster on it. It represents a time of innocence and a symbol of the loss of it. There is no more riding with the freedom of no hands. That freedom and the discipline it takes to live without it, are gone. Michael is in the shackles of the beast and on a journey that Will ultimately destroy him and his family.

Brando looks like my grandfather in that scene - also a man that remained a mystery to me but put his fingerprint on my soul - same rumpled clothing and calm - but left us too soon.

Yes, the restaurant assassination scene deserves its own breakdown. The *audio* from that scene deserves its own breakdown! Creating mood with little or no music.

One line that always lingered was when Vito asks Michael is he's happy with his family and Michael says "yes very happy". Now at this point we have not seen their fights, the divorce, and all that. But still, yet get the sense even in the final scene that he's not. He never lets Kay in. You start to get the sense that if Appollonia had not been killed, she would have been a better match for him, and she understood their family and culture. That's not to say she would have been "let in" but would have already understood and wouldn't ask questions where the answer was already implied. So I'm left to wonder whether Michael is lying here, or just not paying attention. His relationship with Kay and his kids (and Fredo) form the core of the events we see in parts 2 and 3.

This is a critical scene, time has passed since Vito came home and Michael returned from Sicily.learning the family business from his father. I wished they wrote more of this time period. Brando performs perfectly in this scene .

I think the final conversation between Michael and Vito is what turns Michael into a tragic hero. Because if you look upto this point, Michael has just been taking vengeance on being wronged, a kind of motivation that puts him in the audience's favor. It's only after this scene that you realize that something broke in the transformation.
