Ryu Seong-ryong, the Greatest Prime Minister Who Saved a Nation Under the Worst King
If your company, your family, or your nation were facing a dire crisis right now, what kind of leader would you summon?
During the seven years of the Imjin War, amidst an incompetent king and a divided government, how did Ryu Seong-ryong save Joseon? We explore the answer to his leadership.
Ryu Seong-ryong was the prime minister who directly confronted the Imjin War, the most turbulent period in Joseon history. At the time, Joseon was suffering from corruption on the verge of world domination due to factional politics, and King Seonjo, whom he served, was an incompetent monarch who abandoned the capital and fled. Ryu Seong-ryong tearfully appealed to his subjects, abandoned even by the king, to prevent further despair and made the decisive decision to prevent the king from crossing the Yalu River (to the Ming Dynasty). His cry, "Joseon will no longer be Your Majesty's land," was a decisive moment that preserved Joseon's sovereignty.
Ryu Seong-ryong's greatest achievement was his keen insight into talent. He appointed Yi Sun-sin, then a mere 6th-rank Jeongeup County Magistrate, as the Jeolla Left Naval Commander, a groundbreaking appointment that jumped seven ranks. Despite opposition from all, he was convinced of his abilities and his dedication to the nation. Furthermore, in preparation for war, he personally gifted Yi Sun-sin with the military strategy book "Jeungsun Jeonsoo Bangyak" and instructed him to be fully prepared.
After the war broke out, the capital fell to the advancing Japanese invaders, and even Ming reinforcements were unable to easily mobilize. Ryu Seong-ryong personally explained the strategic approach to Pyongyang Fortress to the Ming general, leading the allied forces to recapture it, laying the crucial foundation for a decisive turnaround in the war.
Responsibility in a crisis is a crucial question for leaders in their 40s and 60s. Through Ryu Seong-ryong's life, we hope you will gain insight into what the ultimate responsibility is and who constitutes the best leader.
