We bought ourselves an opal mine for $4,000 AUD, sight unseen, purely on the hope that there might be something hiding down there!
After a trip out to Lightning Ridge to sort out the paperwork, I called the boys and let them know we were golden to dig!
We got underground, had a good look around, and each picked a spot to start digging. The vibes were high and the mine was looking great. There was plenty of movement in the ground, which is always a good sign, as well as tons of potch!
JC found opal pretty much straight away, with enough colour to get us all excited. By the end of day one, we’d seen enough to make the call we went and got the hoist, set it up on the new claim, and relocated the whole operation over from Rod Manning’s claim to our new mine.
Not too long after that, I was definitely feeling like we’d made the right choice, because I found the first bit of red on black colour I’ve ever come across while mining in Lightning Ridge!
Not bad for a $4,000 mine we’d never even seen!
What a trip!
