The Via Pipitone Federico massacre (Palermo, July 29, 1983), in which Rocco Chinnici, the head of the Palermo Investigation Office, his Carabinieri escort Salvatore Bartolotta and Mario Trapassi, and the building's doorman Stefano Li Sacchi, were killed.

He described the command mechanisms within Palermo's mafia districts and the rise of the Corleonesi, led by Totò Riina.

In his testimony on March 8, 1999, Francesco Paolo Anzelmo described Stefano Bontate as a charismatic leader of the Cosa Nostra "Commission," leading a moderate faction opposed to the Corleonesi in the early 1980s. Anzelmo cited Bontate's murder on April 23, 1981, as the beginning of the Second Mafia War, orchestrated by Totò Riina to prevent a plot organized by Bontate himself.
