Pink Floyd's The Final Cut is a powerful anti-war concept album by Roger Waters, exploring the disillusionment and betrayal felt after World War II, focusing on his father's death and critiquing Margaret Thatcher's government and the Falklands War, which Waters saw as a betrayal of the post-war dream for a peaceful world. The album blends personal grief with political commentary, using the backdrop of the Falklands conflict to lament the loss of innocence and the cyclical nature of war.
I think only those who have been through depression can appreciate this album. There have been more times than I can count where I just sat and listened to this album when feeling extremely depressed for it to bring me some comfort and give me means to press on. I don't know if it's because my depression gets a voice and feels released or if it's because my depression feels smaller because of the magnitude of feelings expressed through the album. Either way I feel sense of relief after listening to it. Likewise, I'm only drawn to it when feeling very down. It can lift you up from the depths or drag you down toward them. It all depends on your current mental state.
World War II and the death of Rogers father in it. How higher ranks send men to their deaths from the comfort of distance. Veterans coming and trying to make sense of the world. The Falklands War. Rogers unending hatred for Margaret Tatcher. Suicadal themes. This album is a companion piece to The Wall and explores many similar subjects but in a much more intimate way. It was Rogers last album with PF and many consider it hus first solo album.
Roger Waters and David Gilmor are both fantstic singers. However, David's strength is in hope, perseverance and life, where Roger's strength is in drepression, anxiety and pain. You can pick up on that as early as "The Dark Side of the Moon". It is sad that as the band progressed, Roger pushed the other members away seeming more and more wanting control. In turn you hear less and less of David's vocals and less and less of Richard and Nick. That said, there is still a place for this. As I eluded before, it feeds a dark depressive state.
