In 1887, a museum collector named Henry Hurst spent seventy days combing a Queensland riverbank and walked away with nearly three thousand fossils. More than a century later, researchers are still working through what that single stretch of sand actually contains.

We're pretty much tracing the story of the Chinchilla fossil site, home to the oldest known Komodo dragon fossil anywhere in the world, Diprotodon, the bizarre bulge-cheeked Euryzygoma, and the first fossil evidence of recognizably modern koalas and wombats, collected across 180 years by everyone from a German explorer to two amateur locals who spent 31 years on the riverbank with nothing but patience. A fossil bed still hiding inside an active rifle range, and still giving up new discoveries today.
