We’re building a simple solar-powered boat using the power of the sun — with no fuel and no complicated systems.

In this video, we turn a basic boat into a quiet, electric boat powered by solar energy. We build the electrical system, install the solar panels and battery, and put everything together to see how well this simple setup works out on the lake.

I did a similar set up and put the solar panels on a hinge to be able to orientate them to ward the sun.

A solar dinghy makes a great asset to island life. No fuel, no smoke, just goes. Battery is always full. Do you need navigation lights? Red n green, port starboard? Or not required on your lake? Ive found a thin layer of nail polish to work excellent to convert a cheap white lamp to what is a very expensive marine fixture.

Really enjoyed watching your build out of this boat. I recommend that you do some experimenting by measuring amp draw vs. speed by GPS. I think that you'll find that maximum speed is a huge waste of energy and that you can go very nearly the maximum capable speed and achieve it with MUCH LESS than the maximum amp draw. Make that your cruising speed and your solar panels may actually be able to provide all the power to the motor under some lighting conditions.
