all the money in the world couldn't buy my childhood...that's what this amazing movie is saying... best movie ever made

The much-missed Barry Norman. He was the film expert to me as I was growing up.

The scene that gets me is when you see the sled being covered by snow, and you hear the train whistle in the distance as Charles is being taken away from his family. The train whistle sounds almost hysterically mournful, like a child crying.

RIP Barry Norman, a critic who genuinely loved and appreciated movies

This is about a life stolen from a child PTSD , he was ripped away from his parents with their blessing and made to live a life he never wanted that’s what I feel rosebud meant !

Welles’ great genius lay in inciting and encouraging the genius in others.

Great movie. Listening to Welles in interviews is also a great experience.

Not the greatest "first" film ever made......it's the greatest film ever made. PERIOD!

Orson was obsessed with putting his unique, brilliant, existential vision on film. he was often the victim of pettiness and jealousy among the very moneyed class. it's amazing, frankly, that he accomplished as much as he did. ... he was a master of illusion and, not surprisingly, a lover of performance "magic" a la Blackstone, etc. ... above all: he was a dramatist extraordinaire.

Thanks for posting this very interesting documentary.

You just look with wonder & delight on what he did and would say - Comprehensive Maverick

Favorite film? Citizen Kane.

brilliant last word on this from Orsen Welles.

Di Caprio would be perfect to play Orson, which would make for a very interesting film.

Remarkable breakdown . Thank you

One of the greatest plot holes in movie history is no one was there to hear him say 'Rosebud' when he died.

Instructive... but nota bene, next to nothing is said about the plot, the structure of the story, the meaning of "Rosebud," the meaning of Charles Kane, etc! It's all about the elements: sound, make up, editing, music, etc.

Kane is impossible to look at(or hear)in the same way once you have heard that screenwriter Mankiewicz had exactly the kind of salacious knowledge of Heart's private life, intimate life, with Marion Davies that the young prodigal Welles would have loved. It was, according to Vidal's essay in the New York Review of Books, that "rosebud" was a pet name Heart had for Marion's sex. By writing it into the screenplay and have the characters searching for "rosebud" it fully repudiates Hearst in a way not put on film before of since.

Over the last forty-five years I have watched Citizen Kane many times, and during that time, I have also watched several documentaries about the making of the film.  Prior to this upload, I had neither seen or did I know of this production.  Barry Norman's presentation, with excerpts and interviews I had not seen before, is one of the best and one of the most informative and comprehensive I have seen to date.  Unfortunately, this production is apparently not available on any Region 1 DVD release.

One of "Six Great Subjectivist in Cinema", along with Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, Igmar Bergmen, Jean Loc Goddard with Fredricho Fellino.  Orsen Welles is one of those six.

I have a film degree and I am a Screenwriter and Director. I do not shoot with any format of Positive stock (Magnetic/Digital only Acetate, plastic film stock of a Negative format.  I like all six as " Masters of Subjective Directors". 👍😘
