Hel Walking Tour, Poland 2026. The first settlement here was founded as early as the 12th century by the Kashubians — the indigenous West Slavic people of Pomerania. This historic fishing town lies at the very tip of the Hel Peninsula, in one of the northernmost parts of the country.
For centuries, the inhabitants of the peninsula lived from fishing, while Hel's strategic location turned it into an important maritime and military centre.
