Would this be possible with wet sanding as well?

This, quite literally, changes everything.

This is how I learned to blend decals with top coats. Really good video and how-to make the edges of decals disappear.
I would recommend wet sanding, one can also practice just sanding the very edges of the decals and not the whole thing
but that will take practice. Another way to make this easier is to cut off as much of the clear edge of the decals, and then
going through this whole process, however really good eyesight is needed for this. And yes, lacquers are by far
the best paints to airbrush, and as you did, wait for 48 hours-minimum before repeating the next layers of clear, and for those that want
a matt finish, just airbrush the very last layer matt (flat coat).

Okay, but holy crap, that is a really good way to naturally weather decals

using mark softener also helps thinning out water decals.
