A futuristic city worth an estimated $100 billion was planned beside Singapore — with artificial islands, luxury towers, malls, schools and homes for around 700,000 people.
But things didn’t go according to plan.
China restricted money leaving the country. Malaysian politics changed. COVID shut borders. And Country Garden — the Chinese property giant behind the project — eventually fell into a massive debt crisis.
Forest City soon became known around the world as Malaysia’s “$100 billion ghost city.”
But the story doesn’t end there.
Today, thousands of people live in Forest City, businesses are moving in, and Malaysia is attempting to reinvent the development as a special financial zone.
So what really happened to Forest City? How did one of Asia’s most ambitious megaprojects become a symbol of excess — and could it actually make a comeback?
Wild. Strange. True.
