What a gentleman was Paul Mellon. Compared him  to some of the rich show offs nowadays.

I rode Mill Reef's two work horses at Kingsclere, Aldie & Morris Dancer when they had retired. Both pulled hard and ran away with me on numerous occasions so for Mill Reef to blow them away at Newbury in that racecourse gallop was amazing. As Ian Balding said, he could maintain that 6 furlong speed for a mile and a half. I bought a large framed print of Mill Reef & Geoff Lewis in 1978 which still hangs over the fireplace today! What a horse❤

A great man and a great horse.

I'm 70 and followed racing all my life and 1971 produced the two best horses ever, the best miler brigadier Gerard and the best middle distance horse bar none mill reef and I'm in no doubt that he would have trounced the brigadier over a mile and a quarter and they would have both put Frankel in his place 31:40

I watched Mill Reef as a kid, I met Geoff Lewis, what a nice man.

Thanks for posting.  Really enjoyed spending 30 minutes of my life in the company of great men and the best racehorse that ever lived.

I read his autobiography,  he did not waste hisl life. I think his father owned Pittsburgh!, and was immensely wealthy , but industry was not for him

Something not often spoken about regarding Paul Mellon is the contribution he made to steeplechasing in the United States especially in the Middleburg and The Plains areas of Virginia just outside Washington DC. Quite a few racing related historical markers at at The Virginia gold cup they race around and cross Mellon Field.

Mill Reef was before my time but it wasn’t long before I knew a lot about him and his legacy .
A lot of those races I hadn’t seen before and I didn’t know he’d sired Fairy Footsteps nor Wassl , so a lot learned today . Cheers for that , very much appreciated . If you ever come across anything about Swiss Maid , Mrs Penny , Topsy , Julio Mariner , Celeric or Sharpo and Never So Bold then please bear me in mind . I know this is a labour of love for you but please don’t ever think I’m being pushy or cheeky asking for future posts . Like you I’m a pure lover of the sport and the old favs of that sport . My hey day was 77-90 , lots and lots of those horses that touched me in a financial or better still emotional way I’ve not seen all their races and I’m genuinely grateful and delighted at your willingness to help out , don’t ever think I take that gift for granted ✊
