Wow! Nailed it on every level. 59 years ago, I asked my girlfriend's dad how many people worked for him. He said, "I work for them; they don't work for me". That statement opened my young eyes to realizing a successful company takes team effort.

With that first conversation… I seem to notice with a lot of people in leadership positions or bosses… the assumption seems to be that everyone is looking for a reason to not do their job correctly and they are always looking for the lazy way out.

Those assumptions are going to get people upset who are actually trying to do their best will eventually leave because they realize they cannot change your view of them… they will always be one step away from not doing their job… it creates instability…

It causes high turnover. Does it matter if it’s a business or a nonprofit… people aren’t going to stay when they aren’t valued for the hard work and effort they put in…

Hello! I got an urgent call from my previous boss stating that there was a huge mistake made on one of my payrolls. Apparently, a box was checked in a screen.... that EVERYONE had access to....that created extra pay for a number of people. She explained the situation to me and then said "why would you do that?!" I said "I didn't!". She automatically blamed me. I KNOW I didn't do it. IF I did do it then why didn't she make me fix the error?? I asked several times what I needed to do to fix this on the next payroll and she said that her and Melissa were working on it. I eventually got laid off so I think they wanted me to admit to it so they had a solid reason to give me the boot. Still outta work so I hope they are proud of themselves. 🙄

My examples are as bad as these. Regrettably, my career in purchasing for Fortune 100 business with mostly excellent, committed professionals, was infested by toxic management who were mostly concerned with what their own management wanted. With the exception of about half of the first line managers. Those at least tried to protect us, and translated upper management carp into achievable work. The responsibility was very high, over $130,000,000 in contracts on my desk alone. The only respect we buyers had was from the suppliers we worked with.

I guess I need to be grateful for the boss I have…just last week, he sent me a text because I was way behind schedule…and asked if everything was ok…He hadn’t realized I had taken double the amount of work due to a call out before he came in that morning.

😢 Guaranteed the first instance is a relationship that was already full of unhealthy, toxic, and prideful behaviors on both sides and noone had taken the initiative to be humble enough to try to squash/discuss whatever tension and "bad blood" was present at the start of the relationship.

(First case scenario) This is a conversation that likely would NOT have taken place had the boss just said, "Good evening, can you stop in to see me before your shift tomorrow?" I also feel that the fact that this was done by email lends itself to a defensive and negative vibe from start to finish. Would this have taken place if the interactions were done face to face?? As leaders we have a choice to make as to how we communicate.

Wow! 🎉 I quit a job because they wouldn’t hire me full time after a year of my time plus ‘volunteer’ hours and walking/driving for errands & events. I wanted health care. Boss wanted me to stay and train the new hire. I said Nope - outta here. Was threatened to be replaced with a temp. Ok go ahead.

Not asking a rhetorical question but is the compassionate boss model how it is in the law firm you used to work for? My experience has been that companies keep as few people as possible on staff and work them hard. It seems like the bosses themselves were under too much pressure to be able to be so compassionate toward their employees. Of course that does not excuse their heavy-handed approach in some of your examples.
